How Long to delay entering the Ancient age from Nomadic?
So in the Victor Open Dev, there was a clear advantage to delay the transition from a Nomadic tribe to the Ancient era so that you could grow the population faster.
so quick poll for discussion:
Do you think that is still the case?
If not why? If so, what pop # or other target are you shooting for before you make the transition?

Probably ASAP so you can get cultures before other players.

Sorry to revive this, but...

I'm a new player, and find it fun to play in the nomadic era. I was planning staying there for a while now, but this got me thinking.

So if we wait a long time, what will happen with culture then, exactly?

So it's not recommended to stay too long in the nomadic era, to explore surroundings and gather units by foraging, build population in outposts and such? All culture gain is on halt until we go to next era?

IF you're not playing with the new option to allow people to choose the same cultures as each other, then the problem rises where delaying Leaving an era for too long causes you to be the last person to choose a new culture, from a list where everyone else got their pick already.

This was more pravailant in release year, due to there only being one or two cultures more than the number of players on max settings for each era, meaning choosing to go last has you only picking from a possible list of one or two cultures. With DLCs nowadays, there's more to choose from if you're last.

Many thanks. I bought a version with all DLCs, I think, so everything is new to me.

There was a checkmark where we could select if the cultures could be used by several players, but I left that as negative.

However, I'm only playing on the second lowest difficulty, so the other civs don't go to the next era until you do. So I can choose first.

(I played a bit on normal difficulty, but got overrun and attacked left and right, so I figured I'd do a practice / learning game first )

Anyway, I waited all the way to turn 35 before I left nomadic era recently (at turn 37 now). I then had 5 districts and over 40 tribal units, so army upkeep was heavy, but I've used many to fill the regions with population.

I used a cultural blitz right away so I could found 2 cities and do some attachments, and I feel prepared :steamsunny: Sumerians and Mycenaeans close to my borders, so will be interesting to see how it goes.

Unlike in my previous attempt, this time I have the most powerful military by far, so maybe they'll stay in line.

I try to avoid wars and conflict in games like these, but the combat system is pretty cool in this game, and I notice it's harder to prevent war here than in Civ, so it will be interesting to play a bit more conflict-filled game, which I guess is also more realistic.

Thanks again!

Yep! The A.I in HUMANKIND operate on a Might Makes Right strategy to Diplomacy, so you having the biggest baddest military is sure to make everyone else mind their business.

Good luck with the rest of your game, and I hope your experimenting proves to be fun for ya!

Thanks :lunar2019smilingpig:

I've waited a long time again to go to the next era. Research long done, and all other civs also have 7 stars now, so ready to move on as soon as I do. I have 4250 Fame, and the next on the list has 2300, and is also my ally, so it's probably going to be an easy game.

Interesting that everyone waits for you before changing era, but of course that makes it very easy. Will be interesting to play a normal game later after this.

So far a fun game to learn the mechanics in peace and quiet.

Going to build a few more Olmec Heads before I move on :steamsunny:
