That being said, industry is largely seen as the most powerful FIMS resources for the majority of the game.
So just from that point, Science isn't as strong. As other have mentioned, Industry and Population are the main drivers for most of the game. You can't ignore Science, though.
Interesting. Im on turn 23 as the babalonians and ive got 240 fame compared to the ai's having about 40...
If you're on turn 23, you don't have access to the late game techs period.
Once you get into the later eras, it becomes very easy to balloon in Science without really trying.
HK is just different in that you get rewarded (fame) for other yields and you can't get to the last era off science stars alone.
Im on turn 91, just hit medieval era with most of the medieval tech already reserached. Ive got 3.7k fame versus my enemies having less than 1k fame. 5 cities, and getting 300 influence per turn, and 140 money per turn.
Yeah that's one of the differences I'm starting to really get - the fame mechanic is brilliant as it really looks at all aspects of the civ you've built. Science is just one factor.
