So yes, they are.
Especially the Burst Lantern is known for one-shotting* bosses.
*unless you count applying stacks two or three dozen times before detonating.
I started using them because I thought they would give the boss fights an interesting rhythm, since they kind of force you to really learn the boss so you can survive long enough to get a number of stacks worth using, and when I saw the damage I was doing I became a full-on believer in the RES religion.
I actually beat the Tinge of Terror secret boss just with the two lanterns, it was quite impressive.
It also lets do something nice with smaller mobs not worth 10+ burst stacks instead of just slaping them.
