How to unequip armor?

Let's say I want to wear AND look like Boulderplate. The problem is that when I eguip something, it goes away from my inventory, thus I cannot look like what I have equipped, and even though there is a button to equip/unequip, I have not figured out how to unequip to empty the slot.

I don't know if you are using keyboard or controller. But right clicking equipped items will unequip them. If you want to place an item in the cosmetic only slot, it is to the right and smaller the equipment one. It has an eye inside of it. You can equip into it by left clicking the armor, then left clicking the relevant "eye" slot.
