its always been niche, for the entire 20 years or so of it's existence...
if you have never played Atelier games before why would you care if it's better than the other games or not ? it's not like you would understand if we explained so just buy the game if you want.
get L&S or Lulua first, they are cheaper, if you like those games then proceed to Ryza and if you don't like them, don't bother about getting Ryza

Watch videos and streaming as much as you like.
However, this is limited to Japan.
If you live in a foreign country and want a language other than Japanese, searching for streaming may be difficult.

A game can also sell copies due to hype generated and successful marketing. That doesn't really mean a thing. Even NBA 2K20 sold thousands of copies and it sits at 18% on Steam.
My point is, sales aren't indicative of a product's quality, otherwise we'd give the awards to the best selling games and call it a day. It only correlates because the more volume of players you have playing your game the more feedback you get.
