Steering the horse

I've ridden horses in many games but I've never encountered such an awkward and frustrating experience as I have in RS. If I could go to a first person view, I wouldn't need to try and coordinate my view with the horse's path. Every game from the Assassin's Creed series, Red Dead Redemption, Medieval Dynasty, etc. allows a first person view. Did I miss something in the guide for RS?

There is an option under the game settings to disable mouse steering so that you can use the A & D keys on the keyboard to steer instead of mouse input.

I always play with mouse steering disabled.

Mouse steering doesn't work with horse, enabled or not. In Medieval Dynasty, you can have a 1st or 3rd person view as well as locking the shift key to gallop.
