Maybe because they're not fenced in and aren't free range chickens. put a fence around them and food right by door, or in coop.

Okay, thanks. Guess I got confused when the tutorial just said to put down the food and water somewhere and build a coop. Seemes like that was all that was needed then.

They eat a lot chickens for what you get from them. I killed mine in second game til I had a granary and water wind mil and could use the eggs in cheese or sausages from cows. $6 an egg didn't pay for the food they eat. Roosters eat more too.
