Most profitable way to earn money with milk is to turn it into cheese with a cooker and pan. You can add an egg and mold to increase its value. Mold is sold in the general store. The product has to then dry in a cheese closet.
I think also once it hits midday they stop giving milk, until afternoon. But I might of made the mistake of not realising the container is full. But you can't mix goat with cow milk.
I've had four cows die that were in the paddock, I thought they died because I wasn't milking them.
1.) Cows are milkable twice a day: 0800 and 1700. If they are not milked in the morning, you can milk them up until 1700, when the second milking time kicks in. Each time you milk, you will get a max of 14 units - so it'll take 3 milkings from a Dairy cow (yes, this is an important distinction. See below) to fill one milk can.
2.) When the milk can is full, you cannot use it to collect more milk until it is emptied. If you're having trouble milking your cows, check the milk can for its fullness. If it says 42/42, it's full and you need to change it out for an empty can. The same applies if you're trying to use a can already containing goat milk to collect cow milk - the two are incompatible, and the can will not accept cow milk.
3.) To my knowledge, cows don't die from a lack of milking. I've had MANY cows go in-game weeks or months without being milked and they were quite content with life.
4.) To empty a milk can, you can either craft some cheese, or add portions of the milk to pots of meats - Goat, Beef, Chicken, or Pork - to make either meatballs or sausages. Or you can empty a bucket into a milk can, if that is your choice. I prefer to use the milk cans - the cans and machines are more expensive, but much less work and makes mass collection easier.
5.) You will get more milk from a Dairy cow than you will a Beef cow. Similarly, you will get more meat chunks from a Beef cow than you will a Dairy cow.
I just remember three cows to a can.
