Point of Pets?
(Bear in mind, I have 2 cats irl and I love them dearly. This is only in reference to this game. xP)

So.. looks like a lot of folks are complaining about many, many bugs associated with pets.
But what do they even do in the game? Every other animal you buy has a purpose, be that meat or milk or both. Do the dogs help you hunt? Do cats bring you 'rat meat' or something like that to show it's keeping pests away?

Idk, I just don't want to buy a critter in this game if it doesn't do something. Especially if you constantly have to buy food for it, only for it to choose to starve itself to death instead. Or run off to Narnia.

If other people are happy with something that's just cute, then whatever, but clearly now is not the time for that when they can't even feed themselves while surrounded in food. This is a similar reason as to why I refuse to buy the pets DLC for Farmer's Life. ._,

The idea was probably to make the game feel a litte more alive, or better said less dead. I think I was going to agree that it helped a little but before I knew for sure my dog was gone, twice. Other than that they dont do anything I think.
Btw, the Farmer's Life DLC does a lot more than just add pets, but maybe you consider the rest useless too.

Imo if they improved Ranch Sim's audio it would probably help a lot more to make the game feel alive but thats me, although I would still like the pets if they did not abandon me

Oh the rest of the DLC was fine, but I just couldn't bring myself to buy it as I'd already fallen out of 'love' with the game. A lot of folks really wanted dogs that could help with running down deer and such, but as far as I can tell, the pets are just extra animals that don't contribute to the farm. I dunno if you have to feed 'em, but I wasn't exactly swimming in cash in that game either. (Or this one for that matter since I had to start a new save. xP)

Dogs can fetch items, defend you against wolves/bears and can revive you so are especially useful if playing solo.

That would be good if they stayed alive for more than a couple of days. 2 died so far, one on the first day 10 metres from kennel and food, next after 2 days, just now, he was right behind me, made some cheese. Turned around to find him dead by gate. Healthy beforehand. So far I found pets a waste of time, I'm not buying another one. Don't know what they die of. Maybe separation anxiety when stuck behind gate.

The pets are very buggy and they seem to die from starvation and dehydration because they’re not pathing to the food and water correctly.
Also they don’t seem to do much regarding hunting. If they get into any fight, they don’t have the HP to withstand a fight with a bear or a deer, so they usually end up dying. And the game limits you to one dog or cat at a time so you can’t even buy multiple dogs and bring the pack on a hunt to reduce overall damage.
You also can’t train or breed them. Their sole purpose is to follow you around, and they can’t do that properly because they’ll wander off.
So imo there currently is no point and I would wait for a better update to try again. Or, better yet, leave the game altogether and come back in a few years and hope the game is better when you return. The whole game, overall, is very buggy. I haven’t had much experience with this, however, because I play UE4 version because my laptop doesn’t do UE5 well. Perhaps try the UE4 version while you wait?
