My cat died

We put out a food and water bowl for it in the building where you get Grandpa's first note on the table. He never ate or drank and seemed to disappear. A few days later, we found him dead in the large crop fields :(

Why?

We didn't have a farmhouse yet but I didn't think we needed one. He was allowed to just roam freely.

Sometimes the pets don't come back to the food and water in time, and they die. But, if it was out in the crop fields, it is also possible that a wolf attacked it. The wolves prowl that area quite a bit.

Man :( It was very disturbing. And I couldn't even bury it or give it a good send-off, the only thing possible was to skin it. I was like damn that's messed up. I had to to get rid of the corpse. I feel like there's some unintended behavior because the food and water sat completely untouched, the cat never once ate or drank in the roughly 2 days we had him.
