I have also recently got beef cows and I've built the exact same set up for those too and it works really well.
I've had this not work, and it's why on this farm I isolated the pig pen far from the other silos and windmills. Yeah, at first it was working after the food ran out, and they were dropping like flies. But real life intruded, and I had to save.
After I reloaded none of the ones that were left alive when I saved would die. I even destroyed their windmill (In retrospect I should have destroyed the water bowl, lol), thinking no food, no water, they'd die sooner or later. But, after In-game weeks (I was building some buildings free style), and real time days and THEY WOULD NOT DIE AND WERE BREEDING AGAIN. I had forgotten about them, until I saw a few pigs wondering on the other side of the farm one day. The pen had become so full, they walked on each other to get out! No food, no water. Super Pigs! Where can I purchase such fine animals in real life?
Finally, my patience eroded away, and my humanity gone, I spent the 100+ rounds to terminate them with extreme prejudice.
I think this issue is bug related because in my case all my pigs died after a few days after I stopped feeding them.
when pig farming, create a lot of space to separate sows from boars. Those buggers mate even when not fully grown. Ideal way is to have a separate pen for each, but you can get away with a barn for males and a barn for females. When you want to replenish stocks, just get a male and a female together on a mating pen for a day. Take the adults out when piglets appear and separate the little ones when you can tell the gender.
There is another way if you're lazy. Just get a female and a male on a 6x6 enclosure, when the pen is overflowing with pigs, go on a killing spree. Sell the meat and buy a fresh pair of pigs from the general store.
If only pigs have something like chicken coops that controlled population...but this is my only solution so far.
