You can move animals in to the stalls and close the door. I use them to hold chickens and pigs makes it easier to clean up after.

I tried to use it to quarantine two female pigs, but as soon as I'd open the door to get the second one in, the first would escape...

Most times in real life those stalls would be for horses. Or if you had a sick animal that you wanted to isolate & treat special from the other animals. It could also be used for a pregnant animal, which would then isolate it from the herd, & allow you to keep better track of its condition.

do you need any means of food in the stalls. or just one in or around the barn good enough?

You should put the feed and water trough in each one if you isolate the animals in the stall. I just use the small ones.

I never use stalls after I ended up stuck inside a wall of one. Easier to just use regular fences for any partioning. Not to mention that getting animals inside any small space is PITA.

I would assume that a feed/water trough in the barn should cover all animals in stalls, as long as not too far from troughs. The developers have stated there is a little bit of range that animals can access feed/water, so as to protect them from starving if get stuck.

Also, other players have reported that livestock will access feed from a little bit of distance.

How far this range is?? This would be a good thing to test. Depending on the distance, it could be interesting to place the feed/water troughs on the outside of a fence, so that you can easily access them without having to enter the fenced areas, & risk livestock escaping.

I place them little way from fences and when standing next to fence I can fill throughs without entering. Range at which you can interact with through is pretty long.

thats how I do it too so I can get into barn an nothing gets out cause I got a space to get in close door then go to gated fence where animals are to take care of them.

Animals for whatever reason seem to instantly want to path to open doors, which is really dumb. Stalls seem useless at best. A problem a worst.

Yes. That is why I am making inside barns fence to keep them away from entrance. And additional fences at transit area of my outdoor pens. Still a pain to try get right animal in right place.
