How does multiplayer work on this? Is there a dedicated server option?

Yea so like I haven't bought this yet, but I would be interested in playing with a bunch of buddies. How is a multiplayer game hosted? Is there a dedicated server for Linux for instance that could be online 24/7 ?

Actually this game is P2P using the steam multiplayer support. That means you are permantely in a multiplayer gamemode. If you start a game you also be the host of your farm. All your steam-friends can join your farm at any time using the steam friendlist. The progress of the game is kept by you. The player itself has no personal inventory , bankroll or skill - so its not necessary to save anything from the visitors.

There is no dedicated server and I personally dont expect it to come - because this would cause more problems than anything else. The days ingame are very short and your animals would starve if you are offline for several hours.

Unless they've changed it, literally anyone can join your game if you're appearing online on Steam. This means complete strangers can step into your game and make changes to your farm, perhaps ones that you don't want made. And there's nothing you can do about it. The only way to prevent this is to appear offline while playing it, which of course means then your friends can't join you.

This game also needs an in-game chat, so that can easily chat with other players without having to ALT TAB out to use Steam Chat.

And yes I know all about Discord or TeamSpeak, but some players do not want to use those, & in-game chat is a default for virtually every other game out there.
