Sherlock Holmes versus Jack the Ripper

Sherlock Holmes versus Jack the Ripper

Worth playing til the end
Surprised at the quality of the writing on this one.

While the story threatened to take some painful turns, in the end it all works out very well.

Some of the puzzles required a walkthrough for me, including one where you likely need to look up a date that the game does not provide.

I'm wondering if the other sherlock games are this good.

Edit: I tried Sherlock: awakened, and it was nowhere near as good as this one!

So glad I played this, gripping stuff, that last scene with SH & the ripper in the room was uneasy but awesome viewing, though they showed no goar, leaving not much to imagination to fill in from the facts you learnt through the game. Never knew much about Jack the ripper.
I also had to look up certain dates on wiki as not from the US, and got stuck in two other parts.
Totally enjoyed, looking forward to the other games in the series...

i just finished this game the other day and i thoroughly enjoyed it. [except...thee ellipsse map moment.. ughh] i played the testament of Sherlock Holmes before this one and with both of these games i really didn't play anything else til i was done. i definitely reccommend playing that one as well.

Since this post I tried many of the other supposedly top rated sherlock games.

In retrospect, I really feel the only ones worth playing are ripper and testament.
The other ones are so inferior to these two that they weren't worth the time I put into them.

This is the only Sherlock Holmes game Iv'e played (I was attracted to the Ripper theme) and I thought it was solid overall. A little cluncky in places with some dodgy voice acting here and there. And I don't find these versions of Holmes or Watson desperately convincing - especially with Watson getting sick over the sight of dead bodies and/or gore. He's a doctor (a 19th century one at that) and you just can't be in the medical profession without that disconnect which most ordinary people don't possess. So yeah, I found his character likeable but not dreadfully realistic in spots.

Sounds sort of silly in a game of this type but I was also hoping for a moment in the game where I'd be physically chasing the murderer through the game world, with Jack (identity unknown of course) diving just out of reach behind corners with me and Watson in persuit. That would've been amusing but never came.

Other than that though, great. Some of the puzzels are excellent (when the information is provided - admittedly I just had to consult walkthroughs with some of them). The 19th century feel of London is there. Soundtrack, historical accuracy; again all good enough. Worth playing imo.

Haven't finished it yet, but right now my emotions are mixed. This game is rather straightforward and even somewhat boring. You have absolutely no freedom, just go from one little task to another. Reminds me a little of interactive novel.
I hope it gets better.
The design, soundtrack, details are beautiful.

Great game if you just want to relax and do some serious thinking, writing on this is great, some puzzles are frustrating but very worth figuring out.

Like any game you have tasks to complete, & some of the cases at the start, the non-ripper ones a bit boring, but I think they were kind of like training for the first part, later on when trying to figure out who the ripper is, really makes the game so enjoyable.
Near the end there's a great scene with Homes interrogating a suspect that felt like a movie.

To be fair, in reality even experienced doctors and police were horrified and rendered ill by the sight of the last victim. To anyone playing the game after reading this, trust me when I say there's a reason they have the very last victim's....post-mortem condition.....sculpted in clay. The real crime scene photos - though black and white stills from the 1880s - are still able to turn many a stoic man's stomach.
