Can't Get The Ellipsis Just Right

I have been stuck on this trying to make an ellipsis to find Jack the Ripper for over 30 minutes and even got desprite enough to use a YouTube walkthrough, but even then, I still can't make it work. What am I doing wrong?

I'm having the exact same problem with the yellow elipsis from the wooden compass. I've even tried the solution above but it still doesn't accept it and let me then use the metal compass! It's so silly how finickity this part us. Does anyone have another solution?

I've read that a lot of people have had difficulty with this section. I wish I could help, but I guess I'm one of the lucky few that was able to get through it without much trouble. I was also playing the xbox version, so maybe they tweaked the controls to make it easier to do with a controller. Maybe one of these days I'll get around to another playthrough on PC, and see what everyone's talking about.

I have the game on Steam. No way can I get past the yellow ellipse; game must be broken. :(

I found out from my brother-in-law that if you play it on a laptop, you have to me the ellipse a little wider. That's how I finally did it.

I had trouble with this also, but then I listened closely to the instructions again "the distance from the middle of the line !plus half again the distance!". Therefore, the ellipse has to be about half the distance from the middle line larger than the distance to the endpoints (sounds complicated when explained).

Was also stuck on this for a long time. After no joy from walkthroughs I aimed for several streets wider than the Mitre Sq and Dutsfield's Yard locations (thanks to a tip from someone else's comment on one of several sites I tried!) and it finally worked...

the answer has been given. start between miter and dutfield and make the ellipses wide, I guess just keep trying till it's wide enough for holmes to peep up.

Just draw the circle as shown here the circle is no way near as close as the youtube video shows, the developer really should just re-calibrate this or something

If it doesn't work for you the first time go either smaller or bigger circle: just keep trying till Sherlock goes boo.
