What are the coins good for?

What to do with these coins? I have gotten some as rewards, but what do you do with them? Is there anything else I should know about them?

I assumed it's a leftover from a freemium pay-for-gold model or something like that, but I could be mistaken,

Thanks, I guess it's a leftover of porting the game from mobile to pc then.
