Help, I can't progress any further.

I can't seem to progress any further.

I am up to investigating Arneson's house. I have investigated every footprint, bloodstain, door and have picked up many objects. I have given the horse water. I have even looked at the dead body in the parlour. But I cannot seem to get any further, according to the hints, I need to open a vault, a vault behind the painting in the bedroom. I have searched the bedroom inside and out and I can't seem to trigger the event.

I can only presume it is a case of events being played out in order, are there any things I need to do to trigger the main events? Or is it glitched?

Note: I have looked through most of the hints, and I have reloaded old saves and played through them diffrently than I did previous ones. I have even sought out advice, but it's all been for naught.

Can you send a mail to support (at) frogwares (dot) com describing your situation and attaching your last save? They will look into your save and will make a suggestion for you.

You're still missing discovering something. Have you seen the bloodstain on the wall baseboard near the body? Read the books? Examined the lemon tree? You won't see the safe until you have examined every clue in the house. Make sure you have the champagne bottle, look at all the pictures, and check the toppled chair, for instance.

Oh, thank you, my dear friend! I thought it was something I was missing. I feel a bit daft now for missing something as mere as champagne, but it is worth it to be able to continue on through the game. That champagne better be important, for all the trouble it's caused me.

I can't begin to thank you enough. I'm so happy that it was not glitch, but simply just a missing event.

It was my pleasure. I had gotten stuck at that same part of the game just yesterday -- I had missed the blood on the baseboard -- and I had to resort to an online walkthrough to get past it. I really enjoyed the game as a whole.

I had the same problem. Then I found this post:

And it was exactly what I had missed. The last set of footprints before the gate has multiple areas you need to click with the magnifying glass. When I clicked the lower part of the footprint on the low part of the screen with the magnifying glass, Holmes said something about dragging a large body. Cut scene. Then I was transported back to the master bedroom with Watson discovering the safe.
