Silver earing and Persian carpet are spinoffs so you can play those anytime
Persian Carpet is a spinoff, but Silver Earring is definitely not. Silver Earring is the main series game directly before Awakened. It's true it doesn't really matter when you play it, but it's not a spin-off.
The Case of the Silver Earring is second and is a big move closer to the ongoing format of the series. It's third person with multiple locations and Watson is now present. It's a good story and has some good puzzles.
Then it would be Awakened. I haven't got to it yet. I started with Testament when it came out and went from there and I am only recently playing the whole series.
The Mystery of the Persian Carpet is the first "spin off" it's a hidden object game and re-purposes a lot of the locations from Silver Earring which I got a kick out of.
The chronological order is a bit different with the most recent game Chapter One being first followed by Jack the Ripper and then Awakening.
