How to find/use the magnifying glass

I'm at Stenwick's house, have found the design on the floor of the shed and can see a scrap of fabric over the door, I've followed his footprints and gone to the other side of the wall....but can't progress any further! Walkthroughs keep referring to using the magnifying glass - I used it to look at the stepladder in the bookshop, but it isn't appearing onscreen as I look around the shed and garden, and there isn't one in my inventory. How do I progress from here?

I'm sure I'm missing something terribly simple!

Late for you but maybe for coming generations:

I was also stuck there. You need to look at everything possible.
Follow the footsteps closely. find every splatter of blood (the one I missed was on the cndlestick holder near the body). Make sure you have the champagne.

What I only found afterwards and would have helped immensely, hitting space makes interactable stuff nearby show up.
