What is going on with the german subtitles?
Title
They barely match what is said by the english narrator. They even changed the names of the protagonists.
This is not okay, guys.
Guess for now i will play with english text...

Not only german but all languages and not only chars but villages and stuff, too.
Don't really see any sense in this but square did crap like this in dragonquest before.
Storytelling gets a mess using local subs and overlays.

I agree but the old mages name is better in german. Porzello > Edwin

Typical issue of using different names in translation, though works even worse when the narrator still uses original names

Just wait until you learn about the Japanese text

(They're puns, of course they changed the names)

Not sure about the Puns stuff, at least in german I do not really see some:
Sheera, Blancar, Porzello

Only the third name even has a germany 'aestehtic', the other twos are still english, which makes the change even worse.

I understand the puniness of the castle Präludus and Nächsthausen, but you can't use those changed names in the narration because it will ruin everything, if you force players to read something diffently. Even more something so important as the main protagonists names, which will get narrated over and over.

The change from Ivory Order to 'Weisser Orden' or White Order I also would not consider any kind of an improvement.

It seems to happen in spanish too

Also, there were parts of the spanish translation of Nier Automata that were really poor (certain documents that you get near the end) Their meaning barely matched the english translation (which I think it's the closest to the original material)

I will definitely play VoC in english

Answer is pretty simple here. They've translated the japanese script, like always. The english voice work get's adapted and has it's liberties. I've played the demo too with german subtitles and the japanese narrator. While I'm not fluent in japanese I'm not completely lost in translation and can confirm that the german translation is pretty accurate of what the narrator is speaking.

The name change is another thing. Square Enix is doing it often changing names from the original script, look at Dragon Quest or I am Setsuna. Sometimes the new names work (Dragon Quest has a cool few changes) and sometimes it doesn't (I am Setsuna as an example). Cannot speak for Voice of Cards yet, but since I continue to play with the japanese voice, I don't have much problems here. But playing Final Fantasy X with german subtitles I know how stupid it sounds when the english voice actors say different things compared to the dialogues.

Its standart to translate Subtitles based on the O-Ton in which the game was Designed and Written. So in Cases of Square Enix Games thats nearly always Japanese, since they are a Japanese Company. Therefore Translation is always for Japanes Voice Over...... Voice Over in other Languages need to Change certain Things, because Asian Languages and European ones are vastly different, espacialy once you come to "Mouth Synchronicity" but even with out it, a simple Word to Word Translation would lead to Sentences which make no Sense at all in some Languages.
