"Don't touch the book, Yonah. Even though I would just kick it away from you and it's right next to you, DoN't toUcH iT"
This ruins the beginning of the game for me.

So instead of USING THE METAL PIPE TO MOVE THE BOOK AWAY FROM HER SO SHE CAN'T TOUCH IT, he just tells her not to like some dumb kid is going to follow orders?

Yonah isn't crippled, moving it further away wouldn't necessarily stop her from touching it. She touched it intentionally because she wanted to help her brother as he was fighting, though that didn't work out and she was still unable to help.

At what point did it look like he needed help? He was using a crappy metal pipe and he was decimating the shades.

The further away the book would have been, the harder the decision to touch the book would also have been. It's easier to touch the book when it's LITERALLY NEXT TO HER, but if it were across the room she would have had to *GASP* use her brain for a second. 'Go to the book and risk getting killed by a shade or let her bother continue kicking ass like he was.'

I get what you are saying, but she was just a child, and even her brother is only 16 (IIRC) in that scene, they have both recently run away and are probably quite scared, obviously have been running low on food and maybe sleep as well, so it makes sense that they would make mistakes.
