Should I watch a recap of Drakengard or Gestalt?
Hi, I bought Replicant and Automata recently and Im completely new to the saga. I´m aware Drakengard games come before this ones, but should I watch the recaps of those games beforehand of do they explain what´s going on in the game later on? I´m a huge lore enthusiast.
I don´t even go the Wikia or Wikipedia page in case I get spoilers for Replicant ot Automata. But I´m not sure if they will explain the origins of the world or the situation later in the game, right now I don´t know what´s going on.
(I´m at the very beginning, with the male MC gathering sheep meat and medicine for the sister)

No you don't. Drakengard is an alternate universe although the universes are connected. They are not connected as far as the Nier story is concerned. There is one character that encompasses all games and she is mentioned in Nier Replicant, but it's ok if you don't know her.

Nier Gestalt is a remake of the original for the US demographic with an older main character. Nier Replicant is the remake of both the original and the remake. So you don't miss anything playing this one.

https://youtu.be/9WU1mvH6bqo?si=yF__ww_Dj925xK5F Watch this video, but stop before the Nier Replicant part. The worlds are connected, but it's not necessary to watch this. However, I found it interesting, and it provides a much greater understanding of what's going on

This is just flat out wrong. One of the ending of Drakengard literally causes the events of Nier. The entire reason why Nier exists is due to the way the Dragon crashes into Tokyo. There's a lot actually that happens within Drakengard 1,3,Nier and Automata that are 100% linked.
The entire Ghestalt project only happens because of the Soul Pact from Drakengard 1. Please do not spread misinformation.

i recently played drakengard 1 and 3 to start replicant again since i only played automata. i am enjoying it much more than the first time. The ending of the first drakengard connects to just before the events we play in this game so yeah, get a recap video (because playing them is hell, they are technically bad games)

Oh, yeah. But to be fair, the DrakenNier timeline is extremely complicated and we don't even have access to all the material, unless we live in Japan :(

Tbf, I understand the other point as well, the connection between all Yoko Taro games is left to small references so it doesn't interfiere with whatever history their games are trying to tell. For example, in NieR it's the reason for the post apocalyptic world, but it doesn't interfiere with the whole siblings story, you can perfecly understand that without knowing that Drakengard 1 lead to everything.

I personally would only advice someone to dig into it if they are interested in lore more than playing a game, as the lore is really dense, just for Replicant, 40% of the lore is outside the games (Drama CD, Grimoire NIeR novellas, and the 2 NieR Reincarnation's Dark Memory Stories.)
Play all the games. They are fun. only one that's rough game play wise is the original Drakengard but starting with 2 the game play is quite fun and i had trouble putting the game down and initially beat it in a few days.
I've tried to play Drakengard 1 days ago and gave up shortly after. Ground combat feels like a ♥♥♥♥♥♥ version of Dynasty Warriors (seriously, why a single enemy can stop your combo) while air combat feels off.

You definetely don't have to play drakengard 1 or 3. They are substantially worse games, than replicant or automata, with worse, story, characters, music, graphics and gameplay.

Drakengard 1 is an definetly an interesting game especially for time of release. But it plays substantially worse than PS2 era dynasty warriors.
Drakengard 3 is playable. But is by far the least interesting story from yoko taro imo. And it's only worth playing on emulator as the PS3 version is a disaster that plays at like 10 FPS
I disagree, characters in Drakengard 3 were pretty good

But Flowey from Undertale still is a bigger bastard than the white flower :steammocking::steammocking::steammocking:
