What voice language is everyone playing in?
I usually play Japanese games with Japanese voices since that's what sounds most natural for these games to me. However, I'm curious on what language everyone else is using for the voices. I played Automata in Japanese but I'm thinking of trying this one with the English voices.

Fun fact: Replicant's English voice acting was actually done before the Japanese voice track, and Taro personally oversaw it.

The recording was done, but was the script written first? Reading the article it sounds like they just ended up doing the English dubbing first because of red tape and logistics issues.

Edit: Also worth mentioning that the beeps in Kaine’s JP voice are intentional, literally done as a joke. The beeps don’t bug me and the English version’s swearing is hit or miss because it’s not quite accurate. Dubs like to really go overboard on a foul-mouthed character’s swears sometimes (like how the awful FF7R dub has Aerith saying “♥♥♥♥” a lot which is nowhere close to the level of language she was using).

Hey, as long as they kept "This guy are sick"...

She says shit one single time in the entire game and at an appropriate moment. That's a lot to you?

She says "♥♥♥♥" in surprise as the long ladder she was just climbing breaks and she almost falls down with it.

Not particularly egregious offense if you ask me.

Frankly, it makes her seem more real. People have this weird remembrance of Aerith as being saintly, but she was pretty flirty as well as being somewhat pious.

This is what has you so miffed? You haven't thought this argument through have you?

No, I'm not really miffed. More just fatigued by all the pretentious, smug elitism people like you are practically dripping with.

Anyways, I'll be over here while you continue to set up your straw men to knock down over there.

What fucking elitism? Actually read the argument instead of acting like a child because people are saying something you don't like to hear. I never argued that it was superior way to experience the game. I don't use Japanese, as I prefer English.

It's all good, buddy. You're way smarter than me. You set up my argument for me about the music and knocked it down before I could even make it (or even have any interest in making it). Then told me I hadn't thought it through. 4D chess at its finest.

Anyways, I hope we can at least both agree that, since the Japanese spoken language in this game has subtitles and the dialogue is meant to be understood, the music thing you brought up and argued with yourself over while pretending you were arguing with me, is mostly irrelevant.

You like the English dub, and so do I. Cool. I prefer it, in part, because I honestly don't understand Japanese and don't want to pretend like I do. To me, it sounds like noise. Yes, I am able to hear when the voice actor is angry or happy. But the more complex nuances of the language (like if certain phrases or whatever take on completely different meanings depending on what pitch is being used, for example) are lost on me. You may enjoy listening to it in English for other reasons.

Honestly, it doesn't much matter. The only thing I really took issue with, when it came to other people (not you, specifically) talking about Japanese over English, was that my experience was somehow "fake." Or implying there is something wrong with my empathy if I am honestly pointing out my ignorance on the subtle nuances that are wholly unique to another language.

Japanese of course, I'm not american so american dubs of foreign productions are usually very cringe, should be illegal tbh.

The music thing was side example in my entire point and you just clung to it while actually ignoring the main argument I made, well done.

Then you keep whining about imaginary elitism and purity of experience without even attempting to understand what is being said.

I didn't argue with you in my head. You have in your head this weird notion of pretentiousness that comes entirely out of your unwillingness to actually engage with topic being discussed.

How many times does it have to be said that I'm not claiming one experience to be superior before you are actually willing to listen?

edit: Ok you can see I was getting frustrated, but I noticed that you edited the post and actually responded in a more reasonable manner in the edit. I agree with you that calling the English experience somehow fake is pretty silly.

It's not fake it's not bad. but it is different. It's not the original. But that doesn't mean the original is somehow the "proper" way to experience it, I hope you understand what I'm trying to get at here.

I'll do the same. Doesn't serve anyone to just go at each other, when I think we are just both misunderstanding something about what the other said..

Yes, I think it's best to reach a mutual understanding. I apologize for my toxicity beforehand.

I see where you are coming from when you say it is certainly more true and pure. If I could speak Japanese, I would likely choose Japanese over English, because that will obviously be the more intended method of understanding the story and characters.

I just don't understand Japanese, and therefore, have no way to reasonably get that true understanding. And I think what I was originally pointing out to others was that, unless they speak Japanese, they don't really either (specifically when it comes to what is happening in the story, because we're both getting our information from the same translation whether spoken or subtitled). And I was trying to make it clear that there's nothing wrong with going with whatever language you (again, not you specifically) want to go with, but to then claim others are experiencing a "fake" version or whatever just got a bit of a rise out of me. I now understand there is an argument to be made that it's still getting technically closer, because the voices themselves are the original voices, and their tone/inflections are going to be more in line with what was originally intended. So maybe for those people who want that more authentic experience, I can understand. But for me, I guess I just don't get that same enjoyment. I actually like the English voice acting a lot, and while it may not be as true to the original vision as the Japanese voice acting, I still think it's just as valid an experience to understand the game and its story.

Yeah I think we finally reached an understanding. There are people who go around telling others that you are doing things wrong and somehow enjoying entertainment in an inferior way for using dubs. People like that get mocked for a reason.

Just listen to the dub you prefer and let others do the same.
Its that simple.
And if someone likes the dub you personally dont like better, so what?

English dubs have a bad history, and occasionally a bad one still slips through, be it game or anime.

This isn't one of those times. My only complaint here is that English Yonah's voice feels a little too mature for the character, but otherwise everything else is on point. So yeah, English for me.

In contrast her Japanese counterpart sounds way too young.
