NieR Gestalt
Is it worth plating NieR Gestalt before this for the experience of seeing the original game released in the west and the different perspective of the main character before this one comes out?

These games are the same, but there is a difference between the relationships of the main characters.

Old Man Nier is the best Character in my opinion vs this little brat.

Macho Nier was solely made by the request of Square Enix's western divison to better appeal to western market. He was never in the original design vision of Yoko Taro. We're getting the game as it was originally envisioned by Yoko, not a ridiculous demand by western morons to change the main character for Macho.

@DxRaviken

I mean, they're the same character in pretty much every way. The only real difference is the age. If you liked old man NieR, I genuinely don't see how you would dislike young man NieR.

Do you have a reference for this claim? Gestalt came out on the X360 in Japan, so it's not like it was a Western exclusive.

This is the original interview in Japanese but yes Nier was originally just the young adult brother version until Square Enix's Western side thought a scrawny looking pretty boy wielding a sword ridiculous.

Thank you so much for the article!

Have you played the western release of Nier on PS3? I think we're all wondering if it's worth going through first, but I suspect not given that the combat is outdated and there is very little difference in the story.

I would say the only real thing you'll be missing out on is the extremely good voice acting for Papa NieR. Everything else, from what I understand, will be roughly the same storywise.

There are a few exceptions:

1.) The romance between NieR and Kaine is more appropriate in Replicant, because they are pretty much the same age after the time skip. This is compared to like...50 year old NieR and Kaine together, which is just weird, in my opinion.

2.) It is implied Emil has a crush on Replicant version of NieR, whereas this seems to have been scrapped from the Gestalt version.

3.) The whole "Now you can use big weapons!" thing that happens after the time skip makes more sense in Replicant, since NieR becomes an adult there, and thus would explain why he couldn't wield such weapons as a kid before. It never made sense to me how, in Gestalt, NieR was unable to use two-handed weapons until after five years, despite having the exact same physique.

4.) Obviously, Yonah is NieR's sister in Replicant, as opposed to being his daughter in Gestalt.

And a few other minor things as well, I think.

Old guy is better than the typical cliched teen boy.

Always been much more of a fan of the badass breaking faces as opposed to the cliche whiny wimp.

Both?

Gestalt Nier has his own perpective and interactions with characters, so its definitely worth seeing both slightly different versions of the same story.

Like how his interactions with Weiss are less "mentor and child", and become more "equal partners who occasionally bicker like a married couple" xD.

Gestalt Nier and Yonah are also very different since Yonah is his daughter in that version.

Story stays exactly the same, but a lot of context shifts. So you end up with your own preference.

I didn't play much of the papa NieR version but there were two versions, this one that is to say the original in japan and papa NieR version for the west changing a few relationships in favour of an older man

if you're familiar with Automata, I just think Replicant is the one that makes more sense as the boy looks like 9S, his sister looks a lot like a younger 2B. NeiR has a lot of repeating cycles like that

which version you play is only on which you prefer, the older father or the younger brother

Small correction but Dad Nier was also released in Japan for 360.

But yeah, Brother was the original idea

If you have the chance to play as Garen Nier you should take it asap.

you can quite literally just mod this game to be gestalt. its just who the MC is and how he refers to the sister/daughter.
