Things to consider before buying

I really like Nier, it's one of my favorite games of all time, and that's why I'm completely disappointed in how Square Enix is treating the game. So here's some stuff you should considering before preordering, or even before buying.

1- Automata
It's been over 4 years since it came out, but the only time Square Enix ever let the developers touch it was to released a paid dlc. There have been no patches or fixes in these four years, and Automata was a weird game that simply refused to run on some computers. Some people can't play it to this day. It'll probably be the same for this game.

2- Censorship
Like many other companies nowadays, Square Enix is trying to be "family friendly". They even released fan guidelines that, in Yoko Taro's(the man behind Nier) own words "Nier Violates Square Enix’s Own Guidelines For Fan Creations".
Because of that it was rather unsurprising that Kainé's dress was made longer, which makes no sense given the story behind it, and her model was changed to be more "family friendly".
Actual game spoilers:
Her dress was given to her when she was a small kid. Her still using the dress despite it not even fitting shows how attached she is to the image of femininity and the memory of her grandma. Making the dress longer means either she was a 6' kid or the dress was given years later which has some implications of its own. They've also kept the breast tear despite that which just looks stupid now, as the dress fits perfectly except for that.
Also the bulge is gone.

3- New Graphics
In some aspects the new graphics do look better, but they're not 60 dollars remake tier. It looks like a late ps3 game at best.
They've also changed some things just for the sake of changing them. The desert area's sandy sky was replaced by a generic sunny sky seemingly just to show off the new lightning engine. Other areas were most likely changed as well.

4- Yoko Taro's (lack of) involvement
For those who don't know Yoko Taro is the director and writer behind the Nier and Drakengard(Nier's sort of loosely connected prequel story). In an interview with Siliconera he was asked if he had a temporary seat in the company, as he did with Automata to have better control over the game. He answered
"I do not have a seat at Toylogic. We basically have a talk about once a month or something like that.”
and that explains a lot of the changes that were made.
Toylogic does have some developers that worked on Nier, but that doesn't mean anything as Nier's development was anything but smooth due to the developers.

5- No Papa nier
Basically the game has two versions, Replicant and Gestalt. The games are effectively the same, both being canon, with the sole different being the MC, on Replicant you play as Yohna's brother and on Gestalt you play as her father. This might be a bit subjective but playing as her father is a way better experience because of the relationship dynamics between the two characters.
Yoko Taro said that a Gestalt port might happen if this game sold well, meaning Square Enix will most likely change the model, record some new lines, and sell that version for 60 dollars too to milk the fans for all they're worth.
Now, a model and some audio by itself wouldn't normally be a problem by itself, but the biggest problem with this port is

6-No mods
Regardless of what you think about Denuvo and all the other problems it brings, the fact is
Denuvo almost completely destroys the possibility of any mod.
Total War Warhammer has a huge fanbase filled with modders, but because the game has denuvo all they've achieved to date with their experience in modding was... changing icons. A few new pngs and that's it. Changing models was impossible due to Denuvo.
With Automata modders managed to add in some models for weapons, but not for characters because of Denuvo.

You want to mod papa nier in? Too bad, Square Enix wants to "stop piracy" and they're willing to hurt your experience for it.
You liked the old lighting better and want to try and mod something similar in? Too bad, denuvo.
You want to uncensor Kainé's design? Too bad, Denuvo.

Automata has been cracked for years yet they show no sign of wanting to remove it from that game, Replicant won't be any different.


If you don't care about any of these changes fell free to ignore this post, but if you do I strongly urge you to play the Gestalt version first. It's an amazing game, and one that you should experience the way it was intended to be experienced, not the way Square Enix wants you to.

As far as I know 'True Gamers' play only COD, Fortnite and some of them Minecraft. I'm glad of not being part of that.

you are very wrong. true gamers would never play anything made by a western developer, barring a handful of exceptions. Japanese developers made gaming what it is and they only fail when they try to copy western "developers".

It sure doesn't look like Kaine's dress is all that long in this remake. Censorship is trash and I hate it as much as the next guy, but this seems like ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ like the Lola thing, Have to wonder if SJWs are trying to push fake censorship backlash to make gamers/fans of stuff to look bad. Wouldn't be the first time they tried false flagging.

Warhammer has mods that do more than just change icons. There are mods that add new lords, units, buildings, capitals, gameplay mechanics, a (janky) total conversion to set the game during an elf-dwarf war, and new factions. Yeah, the moddability isn't quite as extensible as what you can do in Rome 2 or Attila but its nowhere near as limited as OP indicates.

4 - he does not need a seat. He is involved tho, which is enough. Maybe those monthly talks take 10h a session, nobody knows that. Besides this game isn't new. It is just a new paint on an old product. No need to oversee it 24/7. And how is this connected with the smoothness of development? It's not like Taro is coding it.

6 - this is just bs and you know it, at least you should, because if you really believe in it you are just spreading misinformation. btw giving TTWH as an example just shows that you have no clue what are you talking about.

The only real thing to consider here is the number 1 on Your list - Is it gonna be an abandoned product like Automata and people will have to wait for a modder to fix it or will it have actual post launch support? This is the real issue. To this day I cannot stomach the fact they left Automata in a state it currently is, even with the goty edition release like wtf.
