How can you have Non-workers xD
They are the last remaining of humanity living on a ship that needs constant repairs in order to not fall appart and there is literally way more non workers than workers... I mean realistically speaking they would all contribute somehow, they should be a way to send them to school or something like that to turn them into specialised workers or something...
I mean the game lasts for decades if you take your time...

This is the only thing bothering me, I already have a sector fuly dedicated to non workers with around 1500-2000 of them sitting there and just eating all our food.

Families of the workers.
Maybe they could have added a way to train them to be workers but that would have conflicted with the later objectives to train them as colonists.
Your workers are your highly skilled and able people that can perform the may highly complex tasks needed to keep the station running.
Your non-workers are basically just all the people not smart or skilled enough for that and otherwise make up the friends and family of your workers.

That's not to say they are without their uses however.
First use, train them as colonists. Each sector after the first (not counting the prologue area) will have one planet in it you can send them to, to test out how well people could survive on certain types of worlds. Basically they make science points and lots of them.
Each of these worlds will require more colonists for the max possible payout.

The other thing they are good at is crap. Literally making the stuff, as this is your golden standard end game resource. The game calls it "waste".
Collect waste, and with the right buildings (which I recommend making a dedicated sector to) you can turn it into anything you may want more of, short of power.
While a lot of places can make this stuff, by far the best option is from houses, which in turn requires as large a population as you can get.
Not only does this make your station self sustaining but you can now, effectively, have all your non-workers "feed" themselves.

Using waste like this is also the only way you'll be able to get a game to last for in game decades, as otherwise you'd just run out of resources.

I do agree that if the game lasted for in game years, it would be an idea to try training these non-workers to be workers, but for two reasons.
1) That time and resources would be better spent trying to get the station self sustaining and then towards a permanent new home that isn't falling apart on us.
2) Game mechanics, if we could just train new workers then a lot of the game challenge (which can already be subverted in a number of ways) goes out the window.

The Devs had many missed opportunities to convey depth to parts of the game. Non workers being one. They could have added a layer of gameplay there, or stats, or stories. You know In station story events are just lacking, so you never feel any connection to these people. I feel that is what hurts this game the most. They are just numbers, and titles classes. you know like, Communism.. : (

Ok, I think we can easily rule out what's going on in the game as being anything like communism, because in the end it worked.

*Sigh*
The joke is that every time someones tried communism, it's failed.
While in the game you can succeed.

(Ignoring the fact that it's canon to the games lore that we also failed, at the same time. This game has fun with its timelines.)

yea i got the joke ( saying ) , my pastor used that line a lot. Communism has never succeeded or produced. Also I learned, Communist pinko from him too. But mostly in depth Bible study : ) And totally agree with him. Even though, the US has serious leadership issues as of late.

Im still not sure, what the story is all about. I feel like i wish there was more intro to story and Lore at the start of the game and a slow progression before they throw you into the main thing. It would've draw it out and had chance to ground the player and make relatable all the characters and populous a bit more.

There's a load of old forum posts digging into and trying to understand the lore of this game, finding them is the hard part.

Luckily for me, I took (heavy) part in some of them so those ones are easier to look up.
Needless to say, there's some massive spoilers in here if you haven't finished the game.

On the original topic of "Non-Workers"; read the upgrades for the Cryonics Center a little more closely. The "flavor text" on these and the cipher translations for Naomi protocols are some of the heavier notes of the game.

Specifically (spoilers btw) it sounds like defrosting people does not work as well as advertised and many suffer permanent brain damage as a result of cold sleep. If I'm remembering the text right, DOLOS is actually happy about this. I keeps people more complacent.
"non workers" doesn't mean they have no contribution to the station, just means you can't employ them in the specific roles covered by the gameplay mechanics. lol
