It will also damage your solar panels which can cause overloads so have spare power available by turning off stuff etc.
While in there working on their ship you will receive a lot more people from them. So a few deaths aren't really a problem.
It is pretty rare for deaths to happen from EVA work though.
I am quite OCD about mimimising casualties too but in Ixion, some people are going to die, you can't avoid it all. It's impossible to get to the end of the game without a few deaths.
Thankfully as mentioned there are plenty of crypods to collect so you have don't have to worry about not having enough people.
Never had a playthrough where I didn't lose crew. I lost crew in the ice, even with the EVA Airlocks turned off.
I'm like ShinZed. It offends my OCD that there isn't away, no matter how hard, to avoid the mechanic. Back during the early period, just before launch, I think I spent like 6 hours just trying to get through that ice without losing anyone. Best I ever did was only 1 death. Once I realized that I was going to lose crew in the current build even if they weren't allowed to go into space... I just accepted the deaths and continued on with the game... but it offends my soul.
