The netcode isn't even up to snuff yet.
Also rammers are a major issue in every racing game. The last game I tried to get into was Forza Horizon 4 but due to no ghost mode and forced free roam rush I quit that garbage.
It's funny because I actually googled to see if PT had any signs of life when I decided FH4 was hot garbage. Don't get me wrong, I loved the physics, graphics, and car customization but honestly that stuff means nothing without basic ass features like ghost mode. It's sad when a game from 2008 has more/better features than a modern racing game.
IMO multiplayer racing has gone way downhill since PT.
In my opinion players are more able to show their true skills when they can take a corner without concern of collision.
Especially in the case of drafting. You could use it to keep up with a player who is clearly taking the corners better than you. Turn on ghost mode and this is no longer an option, that player is now half a lap ahead.
if you start banning people for ramming then I think PT will lose players as you have ghost options already so if you that concerned, use that
There is one major thing you are overlooking. Bumping is 100% legal in real racing. Not outright smashing with the intent to destroy or otherwise kill the opponent, but bump drafting is most certainly allowed, within the rules of Nascar at least.
I dont agree with "Ramming" to get a lead, but I would never argue or denounce someone that bump drafts me. That is part of racing, and skilled players, will be able to utilize this factor to their advantage.
Another common misconception with this game, is blocking. It is completely allowed to block another driver from passing you (hence the need to bump draft), but in this game, you are forced to let others pass you in most cases.
I forgot to mention, what I said ONLY applies to TA. F1, has NEVER allowed hitting of any sort, with obvious reasons.
Full-contact racing is part of the fun, challenge, and appeal. Using opponents to cushion your corners, spinning the dude in front of you out, love-taps while drifiting, all that stuff is fair game and suits the gritty underground street racing theme. Have you never played Need For Speed Underground? If you can't handle trading paint and PIT maneuvers, there's always the time-trial-style ghost mode.
Just because you can, doesn't mean you should. Some contact in racing is inevitable don't get me wrong, but deliberately swiping your enemies off because you can't outdrive them is childish and shouldn't belong in racing games unless it's defined. There's nothing wrong with slight tapping or paint trading but once you start to dramatically affect other person's racing line for an advantage, it's where i'd draw the line. I remember it was similar when PT was under Aeria, but there were a lot of clean good racing too, even though I was slow back then. Haven't tried this steam version yet because of some problems with net framework, but i hope i can test this soon.
The people that played NFSU online were mostly kids(atleast from what i can remember from PS2 online), same with pretty much every arcade racing title like MC3 for example, the racing is obviously more immature and will have people retaliate over nonsense, just be plain aggressive at start or something just as equally dumb. In arcade titles this will most likely never change, but the least you can do is not get on the same level and start ruining the games for others who want to drive with some dignity. I recall PT being a great game to drive and race around with a wheel since it supported h-shifter and axis clutch, so obviously there might be people who want to race more realistically, too.
