This. All day. There's a few games out there that do this remarkably well. Games like Homeworld, the Rebel Galaxy games, Battlestar Galactica and others.
I wonder if it's possible to use AI generated voices (i don't mean those terrible ones from youtube that are used in L4wy3rs of R3dd!t - T3ll Us 4B0uT type videos). Unless you have some faction of borg-like people then that voice of Stephen Hawkin would work.
Hopefully that'll get upgraded as development goes along.
In my understanding thats actually intended, I think he could do better graphics but he specifically chose to make it the same as an artistic decision. Could be wrong though.
Underspace runs natively in Widescreen format, Freelancer requires janky mods to even hope to do this.
Underspace Supports full 4k Resolution and runs buttery smooth at 144FPS (on my Rig)
Freelancer can barely run without crashing in current versions of Windows, and then you need to mod it to do so.
Freelancers Textures and Graphics engine were designed prior to 2003. And could not even hope to achieve the textures and graphics fidelity Underspace does, due to ram usage limitations ( as it was designed for 32-bit Windows XP.) And was limited in both Ram usage and FPS output as it could only use limited Video Memory as well.
Underspace is using a specific art "Style" to achieve a closeness to Freelancer, and this is clearly being done on purpose, however looks far better in actual implementation.
Go through the list of Graphics options available in both games, and you will See Underspace has far more fidelity options and features than were available in Freelancer. Hands down, Anti-aliasing/FXAA, Bloom, Lighting and shadows are all better, as well as special effects like explosions and LAZAAAARRRSS (pew pew PEW)
Planets and Bases are far more detailed, and actually Round!! With awesome textures. Asteroids and Nebula/Storms look awesome.
Like I said, this game is hands down better looking, in every way, ( Not sound wise, voices, Sound effects, and space radio interactions, as well as death cries over the radio could use some work, I agree) but I'd like to remind you as well, this is an extremely small team working on this game, and seriously the fact that anyone even stepped up to this task is amazing in and of itself.
This game is only getting better. I can't wait.
You raise some great points but you're forgetting that Freelancer is way dated right now. While you do have to jump through some hoops to get it running great on modern systems it still works wonderfully when you apply any mods to get it to do so. Still, I bought this game but letting it get fleshed out a bit more before I jump in more.
I loved Freelancer fondly but stopped playing it in the late 10's not because I got bored but work/life reasons. I'd love an updated Freelancer that looked more like Everspace 2 than a HD modded Freelancer but if the Dev made Underspace look more like Freelancer as a design choice then so be it. I'm enjoying the game.
