Power Rangers: Battle for the Grid

Power Rangers: Battle for the Grid

Why do Americans ruin everything
coming out of Japan? Excessive censorship to the point that a show, literally becomes another show like, entirely! I recently started watching the original Zyuranger season 16 in Japanese dub and English sub, the one that became the basis for Mighty Morphin Power Ranger and i am under a cultural shock!

First thing, even though it still is a kid's show, it isn't snowflake friendly and it doesn't shoehorn social justice garbage, like multiculturalism (rangers are of the same race; the american show had almost each ranger be a member of another race, even dressing them with the same color suit, yellow for chinese, black for african, well to be honest THAT was racist!), feminism (original ranger team is composed of one girl 4 boys, american team is made of 2 girls 3 boys to even out the "odds" and changes the male yellow ranger into a female one), etc.

Likewise, there is a small degree of graphical violence, like injured civilians who actually bleed, real guns -even grenades- are pulled out and fired at times! Good old suggestive themes are present; the episode in which rangers turn temporarily evil is really badass (they gamble, beat people up live, even interrupt a yakuza illegal trade)! There are also various american alterations, that make the story inconsistent and the show look really dumb and devoid of contextual meaning; like kids (either in danger, or playing evil) being edited out of important scenes (space shuttle episode, island with dinosaur eggs, Rita's dead/reanimated son and his brainwashed child-squad riding Cyclopsis zord etc).

The rangers don't masquerade, aren't forced to be school students, their overseas school life isn't only boring but full of dumb activist stuff too (pollution petition etc). Zordon is a dignified old man versed in magic, instead of a test tube bald blob. And no bad humor (alpha 5, bulk&skull).

Even worse, the original japanese series contain references and partially draw inspiration from mythology like ancient greek (Dora-Ladon and apples of youth, Dora-Circe and the herb that broke the spell, Dora-Talos instead of Cyclopsis-Zord etc) and names reminding of roman era (dragonzord is dragon-ceasar), which the americans actually axed, making everything be alien, galactic and completely made up. The american ranger weapons are watered down, being more like plastic children toys in appearance, while the japanese ones are normal looking and rangers wield them without transforming, even! There is more action, hits land hard, even the sound effects are satisfying, the putties/golems can at least fight back and launch surprise attacks (from the ground), showing intelligence and occasionally, displaying tactics. The ancient japanese warriors and their eye-catching dressing is way more awesome, than american teens.

And there is even Fanservice! Upskirt flashes, pantsu (especially the episode that space shuttle rushes next to 2 schoolgirls) and all that otaku/weebo goodness, that americans fear and think is of the devil itself!

Americans ruin everything coming out of Japan. Same goes for Yugi oh card-artworks and anime show. Seriously, the universal language should soon change over to Japanese, instead of English. The 9th art screams for that to happen. Censor, go die!

Hey! Leave my childhood Power Rangers out of this! Zyuranger was just as cringey as its american counter part. And as everybody else has mentioned the cultural differences are definitely one of the main reasons for the divergence. I for one think Power Rangers Green Ranger arc is leagues ahead of Zyurangers Green Ranger arc... To each their own.

well you do know the Green Ranger was dead in the first episode; like they killed him off Ep1. He was so short on stock footage compared to the transition of the White Ranger.
Its amazing how much film they made from the Green rangers demise tbh. but pretty sure they used the same falling damage loop for quite some time.
Also gotta love how the Yellow ranger Trini? had a obvious crotch Bulge, and she was the Asian one..
My guess with the color yellow it was less obvious, but idk why not use the black ranger for the Girl and the yellow ranger for the black Guy..

Many people seem to forget that Walter Jones chose being the black ranger lol. I dunno about Trini's actress regarding the decision, but Walter changed roles when they were looking for actors.

The race baiting nonsense is tiresome.

I doubt most kids noticed or cared..
it was fun watching the tom gal kick ass. and the nerd was fun as well.
It was a well versed show, even if it was much like every teen drama, only mixed with martial arts.
It was Genius to mis-mash both into one, and I'm sure all the anime bootleg's at the time were inspiring this idea as well.

There was comment from the producers lately... basically they didn't see the characters as their colors so they assigned the roles to which ever actor or actress wanted them, they did not relizing what they had done in casting until around episode 10 and according to the actors, they didn't mind
Hard cringe all throughout.

Also, black dude being black ranger was a production coincidence. Old, tired take.
Walter Jones himself says Zack was always meant to be Jason's black best friend. Yeah, dumb trendy trope at the time.
However, he was originally meant to be the Blue Ranger. He was changed to the Black Ranger to line up better with the Sentai footage in which Black was the second in command and (don't quote me on this one) best friend of Geki.

I mean to be fair, operation overdrive did the same thing, and no one complains about that

That makes Much more sense . I figured there would have to be a adjustment due to the familiar bonds and connected footage.

I can't see too many times where they could break a color format of the cast..
Power Rangers isn't censorship, it's a different show from the Sentai stuff. So you're... angry and wrong.

well the censorship is due to region . not just plot . a lot of stuff in the Sentai show would not fly in USA EU GR ect..

Kung Pow comes to mind

It was brought over from Japan by a company that used kids as the demographic.

Yep and they used the aging process along side "Time Travel" plots to continue making bank.. Kind of like DBZ GT did.
Also Kamen Rider is pretty great if you need a guy in a supersuit kicking peoples' asses.

Bro, I think you take this just a little too seriously.

Don't waste breath. OP WANTS to be offended, they'll be offended. Just block them, pray you get matched with them so you can beat their ass, and leave them whine and cry in their own piss and squalor.

There's no saving people who want to retroactively be offended by things.

They didn't even watch MMPR, because it wasn't "Social justice" back then. It was wholesome family content. What OP is doing is the real "Social justice" nonsense.

It's kind of like those weebs who watch a few episodes of SAO and are like "WOW I CAN SPEAK JAPANESE NOW, DESU-NE KAWAII GANGURO DAISUKE!" but then get offended when someone calls them out for being full of crap.

People can't be allowed to enjoy things anymore. No, if one person doesn't like it it can't be enjoyed for what it is, or even was. No, instead we have to change everything to be as much of a gray paste as a Putty so as to not offend the "Special snowflakes" that piss and moan about shows from the 90's.

The funny thing is, I 100% believe that OP is actually closet racist now, because since he brought up the "Social justice snowflakes" bit, because the original cast was a range of races and genders instead of all being japanese people.

So because it had a multitude of races in it, it's "Social justice"?

I'm confused. What about the original MMPR was "Social justice" based because from what I've seen (and yes, I've rewatched it recently) it was more just cheesy godzilla-flick style entertainment with some slapstick and spiderman-style one liners.

There's no "OH GOD I'M SO SPECIAL AND YOU AREN'T" or even "Everyone is a ranger" like they did with star wars.

Like REALLY think about it. It's a show about fighting people in skin-tight suits and giant robots fighting giant crabs and robots and giant crab robots.;

How does that ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ equate to "Ruining" something? They took a "Family friendly with hints of edge" and removed the "edgey teen angst" from the japanese rangers series, and made it more relatable to people in the region it was going to be viewed.

Honestly, humanity just makes me wish the cold war went nuclear sometimes so we could have all just avoided having to deal with idiots like OP. Lol

And for you OP:

:Miller: Keep playing yourself like a damn fiddle, But nobody's listening. Your arguments are full of ♥♥♥♥ and you are too. Cheers~ :steamsalty:

The best part is that it's the american versions that people remember and that got used in the JAPANESE MADE fighting game. I wonder why, maybe because one was vastly more popular even after borders were crossed and versions were traded?

Yes, The japanese verison has it's merits. Don't get me wrong. But they're just two different shows using the same base, with permission FROM the original creators. That's why the combat footage is the same.

Japan has a much more lax view on what's "Acceptable" (Ahem, 13 year olds being "Of age"? Disgusting.) but also because there's so many more nuances than "Port a show and dub it", especially for the time, it created a completely new show with lovable characters and plots that grew and became it's own unique thing.

I think the real question is, since the two versions are so different, why are you comparing them as if it's detracting from the japanese version? If you want to watch that, go watch that. If you're young enough to remember MMPR, you're old enough to go buy the damn DVD set now.

The issue isn't the show, it's people like OP trying to make everything "Black and white" and pretending like there wasn't a metric ton of nuances and hoops that had to be jumped through, money spent, testing the boundries of what could and could not be shown at the time, ect.
