How to keep a combo going?
This must be a pretty noob question, but how do you keep combos going?

When I play a match I'll often get pummelled into a corner with the opponent racking up a combo of 15, 30 or beyond.

When I try this I only get 3, maybe 5 hits in before the combo ends, unless I finish with a Super.

What am I missing?

I don't really play fighting games and just got this game a few days ago.

No dont worry , we've all been there . There is a lot "rules" to keep in mind in therm of combo structure but the first thing you need to know is that you go from "ligth to medium to heavy" represented by the square triangle and circle button ( on ps3 controler) and X Y and B on an Xbox controler , or aka , "your auto combos"

Auto-combos are what your character will perform if you only press one of the 3 button mentionned above , where it will do , depending on the character 2 to 4 move the last one knocking your oponent away from you/out , all while losing the control of you character for a brief moment . So to bypass that , you can do the thing mentioned above to avoid "the last hit" of your auto combo and keep going . exemple :

Imagine your ranger auto combos works like this :
- 3hit on the light
-2hit on the medium
-3hit on the hard

instead of pressing only ligth what you need to do a button press like this :

- Ligth , light , medium , hard , hard , hard

That way we avoided the last hit on the ligth and medium auto-combos allowing you to keep going , but has you may have seen on the above list , you did the last hit of your hard auto-combo hence knocking the oponent away , and that's where the launchers comes into play.

The launcher are moves that puts your oponent in the air similar to anti-air (move that cannot be block if you hit an oponent in the air with it unless they have been hit by something else first , in which case , they will block it ) in that regard . the launchers input will difere from character to character but they will allow you to continue your combos , keep in mind that they have rules atach to them , as your are only allowed 2 launcher per combos , upon the third one connecting this will make the oponent "flip out" hence stoping your combos.

So now we got something like this :

- Light , light , medium , hard , hard , launcher

Then simply press jump and while in the air press ligth then medium , and voila , you already got a 8 hits combo .

You can then , meet them on the ground and do a "crouching light" ( down and the light input) to continue even further .

So there you go , you got a pretty "bare bone" explaination on what to do and what to look for , sadly this message is already way to long and there's a LOT of thing i have mentioned , such has juggle limit and how to "by pass" that said juggle limit to go even further into your combos . But for now , play around with your characters , see what moves goes into what and , whatch youtube videos , althought i gota warn you as their "notation" for combo are different than mine as they use the num-pad ( things like "5ML 2M etc etc) instead of "light medium hard special" like i do.

If you wanna add me to train i will be willing to help .

On this my friend , have a good day and have fun !
Ah, the old "If you can't beat them, join them" approach to opponents stringing unsporting infinite combos. Really don't need even more people learning to fight dirty and sucking even more fun out of this game.

Thank you for your detailed reply!

I tried out what you recommended for a few minutes with Tommy and Jason but didn't have much success.

The highest combo I could get was an 11-hit with Jason doing 'Light, Light, Medium, Heavy, Heavy, Heavy, EX-Super,' if I recall correctly.

I tested a variety of move combinations with both characters but most of them ended in combos of 2 or 3 hits.

Is there a list somewhere that serves as a guide to this stuff for each character? Or is it all trial and error?
Try to look for guide online , there's some pretty detailled combo videos out there , i can send you some exemple but i'll need to know the team you're using.

I should have also mentioned that you can go from any of the "light medium and heavy" into special (the X button on ps controler and A on Xbox ) which depending on your character is sometime necesary .

then after all that just train yourself in the training mod , give it time and you'll see yourself get better at it .

Hey there,

I've only been playing against the AI on Easy since getting the game, and may never even play online altogether.

Just in my last session I got devastated with a 15-hit-and-higher combo on at least three occasions. It's even happened in the training tutorials. That tells me that this is by design, and that it's something you're supposed to learn how to do in this game.

But as a new player I understand your frustration. It's rough watching your health getting whittled down to zero from near-full and not being able to do anything about it. It would be nice if there were a way to block, counter or just interrupt getting wailed on like this.

But I read that the developers had brought in a few well-known veteran fighting game developers when designing the mechanics of the game. Because of this I would think the combo system is very much intentional. Enough people have complained about it online, they would have fixed it by now if it was an oversight.

So I'm just trying to find out what it's all about, and see if I can get better at the game in the way I think they want me to get better.

I found this video as well as this guide[wiki.gbl.gg] online, so these might be helpful for me to study.

I just don't even really know what to search for other than "power rangers battle for the grid combo guide."

I've been trying out a variety of different teams, but a couple I keep coming back to are Tommy, Jason and Kimberly ("good-guy team"), as well as Lord Zedd, Dai Shi and Ranger Slayer ("evil team").

However I'll sometimes use either Trini, Cenozoic Blue or "RJ" instead of Kimberly in the former.

Do you have any guides, videos or advice for any of these?
Yes , and here they are ;

jason : https://youtu.be/vaHvg3hPYUk

tommy : https://youtu.be/J4SPhpxa6d4

kimberly/ranger slayer : https://youtu.be/tuN-nB1TQ8M

lord edd , my bad , lord zedd : https://youtu.be/tEd1HwSaHTY

dai-shi : https://youtu.be/Fhu4yCrBxQs

billy ... ah come on why is'nt he in this . "genozoïc blue" : https://youtu.be/10vMfkt-tRY

RJ : https://youtu.be/WG6_D69vvN8

trini : https://youtu.be/7sLFmpJiFFo

They should all be up to date , a few things before watching them , you'll see that his videos are segmented into different "kind" of combos , here are an explaination of the acronyms :

-BnB : stands for "bread and butter" or the combos you'll be doing most of the time , they usualy dish out a good amount of damage and do not requiere a metter ( a bar from your ex/supper ,well , metter) or generate one in the process. focus on those one first to get a good grasp of the characters mechanics

-Set up : a set up is when you intetionaly reset a combo in order to catch your oponent off guard and usualy puts you in a situation where you can easily start another combo right behind it , basicly making a "2 parter combo" . althought this might seems tempting to go for them , keep in mind that they are a double edge sword , first they are usualy input heavy ( requiere a lot of prescise input on your part ) or tricky to pull off and second , if the oponent see it coming , you're ♥♥♥♥♥♥ .

ToD : stand for Touch Of death , a combo that will kill your oponent no matter what , again they seem temping to just straigth up go for them and ignore the BnB combo but you'll need to understand how the character you"re playing works first in order to perform them . they are also input heavy . What i suggest is that you slowly work up to them , adding more and more stuff into your BnB until you can perform them .

Infinite : stay away from them , they are a ToD that , althought REALLY hard to pull off , literaly kills the oponent by finding loops within your characters move , yes , they are allowed and yes some do get patched out of the game , but since you're learning this game , do not atempt them .

Megazord : a combo that incorporate megazord

i would also suggest watching "parkerlad88" videos as they also explain a lot of things about the charaters he makes guide of. https://www.youtube.com/user/ParkerLad88

Have fun my friend !

Have fun my friend !
Thank you so much! These are very helpful.

What does it mean when Starrich 55 writes a ">"? (For example, in the Jason video, the very first Bread and Butter combo he does at 2:50 has a '5H>2H' and a '5MH>2H' and finally a '5MM>EX'. How is this different from when he just uses a comma?)
the ">" means "this goes into this" and the "~" mean you gota delay your hit a bit

I just successfully performed the first combo from the Jason video! I did it three times to make sure it wasn't a fluke. It took a lot of practice, it was kind of like learning a dance. But it was so satisfying when I made progress and finally heard that "Morphenomenal!" My brain is a little fried from all of that memorization and coordination (like I said, I've never really gotten into fighting games, except maybe Super Smash Bros.), so it needs a break to recover. But I did it thanks to you!
eh eh eh , good job my friend ! You took the first step and suceeded !

On this , if you need anything else just ask , and alway remenber to keep on training and to push yourself. Dont give up and you'll manage to do so on every character you're playing .

have fun my friend !
