It's local, but here on Steam you can use Remote Play with a friend to let him join your game: both of you need a decent internet connection, tho.
EDIT: My bad, i didn't see the replies, good to see others help here!

does your friend have to have a copy of the game as well in order to play remote play or is it enough if only you have it?

Only one needs a copy, both can play even if the other one doesn't own the game.
