It is incredibly useful for spotting for your artillery, and your allied AI's if you have one. Keep in mind too that the AI has perfect memory, so they will often keep sniping accurately with their artillery at stuff even if you yourself forgot where they are after the aid runs out.
It can also help you plan out the placement of your reccy to avoid having them be spotted in support of an upcoming attack.
You can also use it to snipe tanks and AA with ATGM carriers and gunships.
