Honestly realism depends on the person. I'd say go for what time period you like. WW2 combat? Go Steel Division. Cold War mechanized combat? Regiments. Modern urban combat? Syrian Warfare.
I will say that I think Regiments offers the best singleplayer.
The price point for Regiments is more than fair, it's nearly stealing money from the dev. You could afford this game and another one. The downside to Regiments is that the amount content is somewhat limited, but what you do get is great and the game is certainly replayable.

The Graviteam series is the most realistic in the genre IMO. Poor UI makes the learning curve harder but when you crack it, it's fantastic.

SD, WG, Warno, Syrian Warfare really are mostly in the same league as Regiments as far as realism goes. Graviteam's series is much more grognard, closer in spirit to Combat Mission than it is from other aforementioned games. On the other hand, if you want other alternatives that are not mentioned above, Massive entertainment games, which share solid foundations with Regiments, are available for sale on GOG
Ground Control is very close to what you'd expect from a Futuristic version of Regiments

World in Conflict is another variation on a common theme

Both are strong products on their own terms and GoG has a 30 days refund policy, so you ain't taking too many risks.
Best pure gameplay and graphics is Warno, but there's no singleplayer content beyond Skirmish. It took a while after SD2 got its launch divisions done for campaigns to release.
Regiments is solid but less tactically interesting / varied than the Eugen titles. The campaign / force progression are solid. It's more like the linear Close Combat campaigns (ie Cross of Iron) in that you progress in stages rather than free movement on a campaign map.
Syrian Warfare I didn't particularly like. Gameplay didn't hook me and the narrative is hammy.
There you go, if you haven't heard about Grandpa

You don't have to in Single Player - IIRC, you actually get new stars in SP. Decks are not defined by the player, they are defined by the scenario, so it ain't too much trouble from a single-player perspective.
In terms of SP, Syrian Warfare campaign has nice story and characters, in a rather unusual way for hardcore rts

and all in this series. Not the same as MoW, but realistic.

Alternatively maybe The Troop, turn based tactics in WW2.
