Why should you need a pause button?

Nah the decision to not stop the action when you pull up the menu was obviously a deliberate choice. No sign of ignorance that I can see :)

Hi,
We didn't add a pause function for a few reason:
1) Possible bugs / issues that might be caused by pausing the game at a certain time. (this might sound like an excuse, but keep in mind when we started the project we were just two university dropouts with 0 experience, so any extra feature we could discard to focus on the boss-fights was great)
2) As we're huge fans of the Souls series and Titan Souls (Duh!) we felt confident in following the formula of "no pause".
3) each boss-fight attempt is relatively short once you get the hang of it (anywhere from 1~3m) so we thought it might not be an issue.
4) Finally, in our mind being able to take a "pause" anytime in a boss-fight, considering they are such short and (hopefully) intense fights, might break the immersion / excitement.

Those are our reasons, but we're doing our best to keep up with the players and add features and fixes as we go (big patch today*!), would you mind telling us why you want a pause button?

id want it because

1) it sounds like an excuse that its too difficulty for you to do for some reason

2) youre trying to copy dark souls and titan souls. dark souls has a multiplayer component which you seem to overlook as required for their lack of pause and the pause in single player has been repeatedly beaten to death about being desired for players across every forum

3) because the overworld of eldest souls is boring, too big, empty and sucks to run through and a complete waste of time, and the bosses require a few attempts and having to quickly run off from the computer while playing a boss isnt fun.

4) the bosses are not "short" fights when you get to higher difficulties, nor is "short" an excuse. at any time someone playing at some point will have to leave during a boss fight. its stupid to have to return to a Retry - Give Up screen with no control.

5) my record for a boss fight is 1:03. that isnt short. 10 seconds is short. during a minute, repeatedly throughout an hour there is a big chance someone will have to go do something somewhere. one boss fight is 1:03. 30 boss fights is 30 minutes. you dont think someone has to leave at some point for a reason in those 30 minutes?

Thank you for your feedback :estusfull:

oh another, more personal reason.

as i said the game's overworld sucks. its super boring and putting on the infinite dash shard to get through it seems like an oversight at how large, and empty the world is.

so i play this game in arena mode, for fun, while queueing for other games that take 5-10 minutes to find a game.

it would be nice to be able to pause eldest souls after matchmaking found a game and flip back and forth without an issue.

@ChonkyRat
I never thought about playing Eldest as a way to pass time while queuing other games, and it honestly makes the request more understandable from our side, since I do the same with some SP games. Thanks again for sharing this with us.
As a side note, you mentioned a few times that the Overworld is boring, are you aware you can quick travel between checkpoints? You probably are, but just wanted to double check :praisesun:

Thanks again!
ChonkyRat Aug 9, 2021 @ 1:29pm
yes im on NG+2, the check points help for sure but that doesnt mean running around hunting for items that make no impact was fun. my experience starting in NG+1 is (die a lot and git gud with the increased difficulty) rush asap to get the dash flower so i can dash to each new boss while also using check points.

theres too much empty space. 8 bosses was a huge let down i was expect a lot more. games for $20 like deaths gambit have 8 bosses with a huge platformer world to it. salt and sanctuary is $20 and has 10? bosses and NG+7 and a massive RPG aspect to it with builds, classes, items, maps, etc

eldest souls is $20 for an empty lifeless world with no rpg, no items (that matter) and 8 bosses only.

im not saying your game is worse or better, i enjoy it but the world? bah waste of time. would have been a significantly better product with 10 or 11 bosses and straight arena mode with no wasted time on "story" or "lore" or the artists working on the world map.

but yes, my main gripe is queueing for games with ES open and enjoying experimenting with different shards, no shards, different builds (green red blue) or no builds and testing myself but still, all the while queueing for other games.

pause!!

speaking of checkpoints, each boss should be updated to match the guardian. there is a safe space to adjust your build. EOS instantly fights (yes you can quickly hot swap but whatever), the ice yeti instantly starts, deer god does not guardian does not.

it would be nice to have a small section of breathing room without having to click GIVE UP and then go back to the check point, and run all the way back to the boss JUST to try a new build.

I do not think you understand the point of the game. It's a BOSS RUSH. Not a complete RPG with boring grinding for level to get strong (yes, I like DS and all games like this but most for its bosses, not for the grind, but thats just my opinion), but a game that depends exclusive on your skill and simple but fun builds. When you say the "world it's boring" and does not have massive RPG elements, it's like you bought the game and did not read what it was about.

About the pause button I'd also like to get one. But the game it's good and complete the way it is for now since it came out recently. The one thing I expect from the developers is to keep the game alive for a while (like Dead Cells) and do not leave it behind for another projetct after 1 or 2 updates, because I think it has a lot of potential.

nice one meg, wow. you missed the entire point of my post.

i literally said im not saying the game is better or worse, im giving feedback on instead of having a lifeless boring world they should have spent a lot more time making MORE bosses, in their BOSS RUSH game.

i literally said scrap the lore, forget the "world", just make more bosses since thats the fun part of the game.

10/10 reading skills

I think I got the point of your post, you just compared the game with RPG games:

"theres too much empty space. 8 bosses was a huge let down i was expect a lot more. games for $20 like deaths gambit have 8 bosses with a huge platformer world to it. salt and sanctuary is $20 and has 10? bosses and NG+7 and a massive RPG aspect to it with builds, classes, items, maps, etc

eldest souls is $20 for an empty lifeless world with no rpg, no items (that matter) and 8 bosses only."

These are your words. Yes you talk about the number of bosses, but also you are complaining about RPG and even platform elements that the game should not have. If that's not what you mean, you should improve your writing skills.

I'm not defending the game or anything like that, I'd like a pause button and future updates with new bosses. I'm just pointing out the part where the criticisms in your post are just nonsense.

I get the sense about paying homage to this game's inspiration, but when there's no mutli-player component in effect, having no pause button is an odd choice. Also, since there's not a single consumable item (aka healing stuff) in the game, there will no benefit to having the game pause when the inventory is up.

If there's a worry that players would abuse the pause to switch up skills and boss shards, then put on a lock function during a boss fight. Or simply freeze the whole game when in pause mode.

Also, what's wrong with allowing a player to pause the game to answer the phone or the door? What if there's an emergency? Doesn't make any sense not to have a pause function.

pourquoi un jeu en 2021 n'a pas de pause oO ???
C'est super du coup quand mes enfants où ma femme me parle je dois juste me laisser mourir et refaire mon run....

To add to my experience. Start a boss fight, it's really intense, my food is ready and I need to get it out of the oven, I'm halfway through the fight and doing really well. Do I 1) go on fighting the boss and possibly burn my food or 2) sigh and accept I gotta restart the bossfight again.

While I can understand not wanting to add unnecessarily features when you're just starting out, I think players kinda expect to be able to pause and do other things real quick in single player games, and bosses can definitely take longer than just 1-3m depending on difficulty imo
