Place the conveyor on the grid, grab the conveyor and not the pipe.
Regarding the hammer, if the conveyor is hammered to the pipe you can't pull it off the pipe, then use the method as Wonko described. This is independent of the pipe being hammered to the grid, or not.
EDIT: When I say it's "definitely NOT the best idea to leave a Conveyor locked to the Pipe", I mean not leave it lying around not locked to the Pipe. I do NOT mean "never lock a Conveyor using the Construction Hammer". If it's part of a Conveyor line and is in operation it's always a good idea to lock it so you don't accidentally pick it up and cause Dirt to fall all over the ground.
