Did you actually place the anvil? Or did you just drop it instead?
Cause someone recently had similar "problem" and turns out they just didn't place the anvil correctly and just dropped it instead.

And make sure you select the dagger recipe first by left clicking on placed anvil till you see the recipe shown drawn with chalk on it.

make sure the iron is hot. a nice trick is to place it on the edge of the forge where it can get heated but not dropped into the fire so its easier to grab. second make sure that the chalk design is the dagger. third make sure to drop the material in the right slot. there is a slot of the material and it even tells you if its for a gem, metal, or nothing.

Granted, I'm not specifically talking about a Dagger, but one trick that's helped me for Necklaces, in particular, is to place the Jewel in a Pan and then a single Bar (Iron or Gold) in the Pan. Stick the Pan on the Furnace and apply the Saw to cut the Bar in half (2 Bars for a Necklace). Give it a chance to get nice and hot (glowing bright Orange), pick up the hold Pan, drop it onto the Anvil (make sure the Pan is FLAT on the Anvil), pick up the Blacksmith Hammer (again, make sure it's the correct hammer), and hit the Anvil with the Hammer. This worked, at least under pre-v2.2, and made it a lot easier to track, as the resulting Jewelry or Weapon would "stick" to the Pan. It could be picked up on its own, separating easily from the Pan or the Pan could be picked up, bringing the object with it.

This absolutely no longer works with the new anvil and the way it functions.

yeah I planted the anvil.
looks like I had to put the bar very near those slots on the anvil for it to work :)

place the crucible down, then lock it down. the place a small concert block on top of it and lock it down. An bars put on top will heat up and because its sitting on the concret block, its easy to pick up.
