Online Multiplayer
Is this game ever going to get real online multiplayer?

Due to the amount of physics involved in the game and the Graphics Engine (Unreal Engine 4 - UE4), there's too much data to be transmitted and keep the game in sync. Therefore, until there is a complete rewrite of the game to at least UE5 (minimum), the only option is Splitscreen.

Damn shame, both my friends and i had this on our wishlists hoping for true co-op.

Scratch another few sales i guess.

This game will never take off without true multiplayer. Invest the time, convert it to UE5, and watch it take off. Until then, it's just fanboy playing this game.

Hydroneer has already sold over 600,000 copies. If that doesn't count as "taking off", I'm not sure what does.

As for multiplayer, it's not as simple as porting it to UE5.. there's a lot more to it, which I go into detail over in the multiplayer FAQ pinned to this forum

as a UE dev myself, I can assure anyone wondering, Physics with Unreal Engine out of the box is not Online Multiplayer friendly. To get the most out of physics in Unreal Engine you really are required to change how the engine handles physics in the source version of it.

I would love to play it, I'm personally at a point in my life where I never really play these sort of games myself only with a friend. I can understand UE5 being a potential upgrade, due to the chaos physics over the traditional UE4 methods. This upgrade would definitely be a lot of work. especially when the game has such a solid foundation already. So i wouldn't put it past the devs to not bother.

'If you do, i commend your commitment' lol

looks like a fantastic game, very impressed. also congrats on the 600k sales, I should Think due to the nature of the game and popularity of the genre, you'll hit 1M in no time.

Uhh? You could get 600,002 copies sold if you made it fully multiplayer, so me and my friend dont have to stare at what eatchother is doing, and use a controller and a mouse to play... You want help with the development, we would be happy to help, and have TONS of AI services to do so as well as hands on work.

Guys, this discussion is pointless. As *I* said, back on August 15th, the Dev's have said that "true multiplayer" is just not possible. Even with an EXTREMELY fast Internet connection, the quantity of data that would need to be synced just cannot be done. This game uses real time physics. Each piece of Dirt, each piece of Raw Ore, each pipe, each Conveyor sitting loose in a world has physics calculations. There's too much data involved to be synced, so it will not happen any time in the near future. Maybe in Unreal Engine 242, it'll become possible, but that's in the far future and will not be happening any time soon.
