You'll notice tools come in "tiers." T1, T2, T3. The ONLY difference between the tiers is how deep they can dig/operate. T1 is for "tier 1 dirt" from the surface down to 8 blocks deep. T2 can go down into "tier 2 dirt" 14 blocks down. T3 works until bedrock. This is from an online guide. As far as I know it is still accurate.

Are tiers actually individual items now? or still based only on dept? I.E. if I bring T3 dirt to the surface, does it stay t3?

You have to have your drills at the tier you're mining now, bringing dirt up to the service no longer works. And as for the tools, T1 pick etc. is for T1 dirt, T2 pick etc. is for T2 and so on.

iit used to be the case where you could bring deeper dirt up to the surface for your drills to sit on, but that was patched out around a year ago. Now, the deeper a drill is placed the better products it will mine (bigger ores, more likely to find corestone and cloutium).

So what you want to do is mine out a big whole and run your drills as deep as possible, then either build processing right next to them or belt the dirt to the surface for processing

Is that true of depth? or just tier?

I.E will I get better stuff at the bottom of t1 than I will at the top?

Yes. If you mine at the top of tier 1 (on the surface) you will not get cloutium or corestore at all, literally none. If you place your drills on the bottom of tier 1, as low as they can go on the starting plot for example, then you will start getting cloutium. Corestone can be obtained at Tier 2 and lower.

You get more of the rarer stuff (and bigger chunks which means more resources) the deeper you go
