oh okay did they change that at some point because i used to play alot like when it first came out but took a big break from it

iirc It was always like that. Each filter redices water/lava damage by 20% therefore you need 5.

Filters also break down. They have to be repaired manually or automatically.

But it's much easier to monitor and repair five things in one space than running all around trying to identify which machines may or may not be working. Even if you're only got a few machines I'd still rather get a filter setup in place ASAP, the only minor annoyance is that your entire setup grinds to a halt as soon as any one of them breaks, but that's a good thing as it prevents any further downstream damage.

It's a good idea to place a Logic Valve immediately after the Intake Pipe. That way, you can completely turn off water to the whole Mine if it's not in operation. Even if nothing is doing anything, the filters will still take damage, wasting those precious wrenches...
