Tutorial problem
I've tried umpteen times to get on with this game and abandoned it in frustration. I thought this time I'll really make an effort and try to persevere through the tutorial. It seemed to be going fine until I had to make a ring on the anvil. I've done everything it says but all I get is a ridiculous grunt and the hammer will not form the ring. Can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong as I've followed every step it says, even re-heating the gold bar in case that was the problem. Also is there a way of adjusting the placing point of items and resources as this is also very frustrating trying to work out where to place things as they never land where you want them to.

When you're holding something, there will be a circle icon to indicate where you will drop it. That's where the thing will land, physics and terrain does the rest. So on the anvil: you don't really have a problem.

As for crafting the ring: hot gold bar in first slot, gem in the second slot, and make sure you actually click on the anvil to cycle through the available recipes to actually be crafting the ring.

Edit: also, there is a blacksmith hammer and a construction hammer, and they are NOT interchangeable.

Thanks for your reply - I tried the tutorial again but still not working. I just started the game proper instead and bought the anvil, blacksmith's hammer and grinding wheel. This time the anvil has two slots for bars and a gem slot but still it doesn't want to work. I have noticed other people having the same problem so it seems to be some sort of bug. I've tried restarting the game and still nothing. Thanks anyway though.

Have you set the recipe for a ring on the anvil before trying to make a ring?

The most common part players misunderstand about this stage of the tutorial is that you have to heat the bar in the furnace before crafting on the anvil. Hope that helps :)

I thought we had already heated the bar when pouring it out into the mold. Could have been a bit clearer here but thanks anyway.

To be fair it is written at the bottom of the screen at that stage of the tutorial, but noted, we'll look into making it clearer in the future :)

Tried and tried to craft the ring after re-heating gold bar but it still doesn't work. Some idea of when the metal is properly heated wouldn't go amiss (or am I missing that as well?). What makes it worse is I've been exploring and someone called Ron or Roy (?) wants me to make him a ring????? - well that won't be happening anytime soon, if at all.

Just a follow up - my daughter suggested putting the gold bar on the furnace to re-heat it and not inside the crucible to re-heat it and it worked. Sincere apologies - off to see Roy or Ron (?).

Make sure you click on the anvil to select the ring recipe - you can't just drop materials on to the anvil, even if you put everything in the right spots, it needs to have the correct recipe showing in the chalk outline on the anvil. Caught me out after going back to the game for the DLC even though I've put in 100+ hours before, apparently I just completely forgot how the basics work...

I'm having the same problem. Broken game for me. I've played this game a fair bit but since dlc the ring tutorial won't pass as I get a huh? When using the blacksmith hammer. Even in game I'm getting same issue, I'm doing to it when the bar is hot and putting them directly in the aligned slots and it doesn't recognise it. Maybe if you mouse click and allocate to a slot so you know it works would be better than drop it in. But yeah still, can't use the anvil.......

There's currently no issues in the tutorial.
Please post a screenshot of the anvil as you try and craft so we can advise what you may be doing wrong, thanks!

Urgh, I just tried the tutorial and quit in frustration. The controls seem to be purposefully obtuse / different to everything else? I cannot even do more than pick up the lantern, then pick up something else like the shovel or the pan, which drops the lantern, There seems to be no inventory either? Everything following is just repeating the same thing. Pick something up, try to do an action, item drops to the ground, I get frustrated and quit. Actions only sometimes perform, like trying to dig with the shovel mostly does not work, and if it does, I cannot tell if any dirt went into the bucket....
Ive tried the controller but it appears to have no action button I could make do anything. K+M I managed to get the "you managed to pick up an object" award.... Maybe its me, but I just cannot click with the controls. What am I missing?
And due to the ♥♥♥♥♥♥ $team 2 hour limit on refunds, it doesnt leave much time to sit there and try and patiently persevere and see whats going wrong...

Hydroneer purposefully does not have an Inventory. That was a design decision by the Dev's. You can only carry a single item at a time. Additionally, there are two locations to be aware of. If you need to left-click on something, you point your mouse at it (center of screen) and click. If you're going to DROP something there's a small circle on the ground that represents where a dropped item will land. You can change the color of this small circle in Settings to make it more visible. It is definitely something to be aware of...

As for the Anvil, it must be PLACED to be used, not dropped. You place an anvil by picking it up, left clicking to locate where you want to place it, and left clicking again to PLACE it. Once placed, left click on the Anvil to choose what you want to create. From a blank Anvil, the first click will select Dagger, second click will select Battle Axe, third click will select Sword, forth click will select Ring, and fifth click will select Necklace. It'll then cycle through those 6 selections (Blank, Dagger, Battle Axe, Sword, Ring, and Necklace). Each option will then provide marked, depressed rectangles numbered 1 to 3 (as needed for the Item), that represents where each Ore or Gem should be placed. You then need to look at the scroll as it will also have numbered Ore or Gems. The numbers need to match to construct the correct Item. If the Scroll says 1. X Iron, 2. Y Gold, 3. Z Ruby, those Ore/Gems must be placed in those slots with the correct or heavier weight than identified on the Scroll. Most people just recommend rounding up to the next whole number, as the Saw Hook with a Number Keypad can only cut to a whole number.

Therefore:
  1. 30 x Gold
  2. 257.5 Iron
  3. 86.5 Ruby
...does NOT equal
  1. 30 x Gold
  2. 86.5 Ruby
  3. 257.5 Iron
The Gold will end up in the correct spot, but the Ruby and the Iron will not. In this case, the Necklace will NOT be made (Necklace and Sword are the only items that use 3 materials, but only Necklace uses a Gem - materials CAN be duplicated), as the Gem MUST be in slot #3. It also does NOT equal:
  1. 257.5 Iron
  2. 30 x Gold
  3. 86.5 Ruby
The Ruby will end up in the correct spot, but the Gold and the Iron will not. In this case, the Necklace will be made but it will not be accepted by the requester.

If you have any further questions, please clearly identify what you're having an issue with...

Hang it there. I felt the same at first but have played over 1000 hrs now. Its a slog at the beginning but once you catch on its a hell of a ride.

Yeah the tutorials are worded HORRIBLY in places, it's sad to see the devs blaming and deflecting on the players both here and on reddit instead of striving to reword the tutorial to make it more legible, terrible attitude to have, especially for an early access game. If this many people are having this issue with the wording in the tutorial then perhaps it isn't a fringe case. I launched the tutorial to learn how to play the game, and yet I have had to google what the ♥♥♥♥ the tutorial means in places.
