Yeah, you can fully automate the gathering of resources. It may take a while to set up, but never having to hand-sort again pays for itself very quickly :)
It takes some time to figure out the logic, but I completely automated my entire mine. So yes it can be done.
In short, the Harvester (whether it's on Bastion Island or Volcalidus and is a regular Lava Harvester or Heavy Lava Harvester)/Sorter/Smelter/Gem Compressor segment should be as short as possible to optimize efficiency and keep FPS as high as possible. It consists of two segments, Ore and Gems:
- As close as possible to the output of the Harvester, place a Sorter Conveyor (which one, right or left, doesn't matter). I generally recommend Gold or Iron first with the other second.
- This should output the sorted material to a Smelter, whether it's a Logic Smelter or a regular Smelter, to keep the Ore in liquid form. For the Logic Smelter, I HIGHLY recommend that the Ore be dropped into the Smelter from at least one Grid Square above the top of the Logic Smelter.
- You'll need 5 sets of these - Gold, Iron, Shard, Corestone, and Cloutium - with a 6th Sorter feeding to the Stone Crusher for Hard Stone.
- Immediately after the Hard Stone Sorter, place a Straight Conveyor with a Gem Polishing Hook on it.
- You'll then need 5 more sets of Sorters, recommended to be in the following order: Emerald, Sapphire, Ruby, Diamond, and Onyx.
- Each of these will output to a Gem Compressor.
This keeps the quantity of Items in the world to a minimum, as Raw Ore Nuggets, Raw Gems, and Polished Gems are the items that are most likely to crush FPS. The part that requires a minimum of Logic would be a set of at least two Straight Conveyors with a Logic Saw Hook on the last one. The Logic Saw Hook needs a Logic Keypad connected to it. You deliver whatever you need to cut to size onto the first of the two Straight Conveyors, which sends it through the Logic Saw Hook. They Logic Keypad tells the Saw Hook the size of the Item to cut off. The cut off portion gets delivered out the opposite side from the Logic connection on the Saw Hook and the remaining portion just continues on through.Let us know if you need any clarification on any of this. Please be as detailed as you can as to what you don't understand.
I'd look to get AT LEAST 4 going early, the third being Shards. This will allow you to have a supply of Shard Bars available for any Pressure Tanks you have in your Mine...
But yeah the game really is about getting over that hump and there are many ways to go. You start out with every bit of ore being vital to you as you scrape for HC, but then you are dropping/leaving huge stacks of HC at all the stores and using the clear raw resources without a second thought.
Also for the shards, I sort them into a smelter down in the depths of my mine right after my harvester. This is where I need them anyway for the boosters right before drills and harvester, I mean you can't craft with shards, shame too, we could have light-sabers. Second reason is I'm just use to it as shards use to have issue falling through inclined belts, this is better now, but I still feel like I get less jams this way.
