Crop growth is broken

Crop growth stops before creating a product, even if I continue to water them. I'm not sure why this happens but I think it happens after I've been gone for enough time without watering them. In one instance the crops were able to be harvested when I continued to water the crops immediately after their soil dried.

Your crops also need a sufficient light level to grow. If you plant in a place where it's shaded most of the day, or underground, you will have to use logic light to help your plants grow.

Is it always the case that they grow once to maturity, are harvested of veg, then never grow another veg?

Yes, each plant only yields one harvest. Once you harvest the crops, you have to use the sickle to cut down the plant and then put a new seed in.

...and that's why the Seed Mill is such a critical component. One only needs to purchase a SINGLE Seed for each type of Veg. If one follows that technique, turn ALL the produce of each Veg back into Seeds for the first several rounds of growth. Once you're producing enough Veg to use some for Soup and some for Seed, split the Veg roughly 50/50 and turn one half into Seed and use the rest for Soup.

This is especially true for the Veg that requires Farming Tokens to purchase. Purchase only a Single Seed of each plant and cycle it back around until you're producing enough. Save your Farming Tokens for things like Sprinklers or a HydroCropper...

They were all planted in plain sight next to the town that sells farming stuff.

If you're talking about South Hope, that's a fair amount of open space. If you're talking about Dreck Quarry, I'm much less familiar with it's layout...
