Ore veins have an increased rate of the vein's Ore type occurring. In non-vein dirt, Gold and Iron have the highest occurrence rate, while Shard is the 3rd most frequent, with Corestone and Cloutium being least likely. A Cloutium Vein, I believe will have a similar rate of Dirt containing Cloutium as it is to contain Gold or Iron. The rate of occurrence may be off, but that's the idea.

Not sure if the Mole vehicle or a Rake destroys the vein or if Dirt placed there takes on the properties of the vein. I'd suspect Mini-Nukes may destroy the vein, but that's only a guess. Also unsure about TnT.

Mole doesn't seem to destroy veins.
While i was playing around with it on a test creative save i accidently uncovered ore veins with it.

They weren't destroyed just the vein effect was "suspended" in air where the mole tunnel now was.

Vein has no physical interaction or collision, its just a sphere of sparkles which indicates that dirt chunks mined from this area will be "special". So you put a drill inside the radius the sphere and you get improved rates of whichever the vein is. I will probably measure the rates more accurately later, but just visually im guestimating about ~35% rate of cloutium on my cloutium vein (with 30-35% iron and 30-35% other stuff). So its pretty darn good. The catch though is that you want your veins to be deep. Because the chunk sizes that you get from a vein are still related to the layer depth. So you can be getting tiny chunks of cloutium 35% of the time or you can be getting giant chunks of cloutium 35% of the time. And the difference is huge.

So best of luck to you :P

Edit: and yes, you can bring your own dirt-blobs for drills into the sphere, it doesnt matter, works the same as with dirt layers.

I wish you could destroy veins, I've got a gold vein floating in mid-air right at the front of the Icehelm dig site which is utterly useless and right in front of all my smelting machines. Dug out everything around it and now it's just sparkling away in mid-air being annoying.
The author of this thread has indicated that this post answers the original topic.

The round colored spheres of floating ore are "veins." So its a sphere of influence

There are cloutium veins? Good to know. I only ever find iron or gold veins. Does anyone know if vein locations are fixed or randomized for each playthrough? If the former, maybe they can be compiled into a map.

DONT USED THE ORE VEINS THEN

Edit: the ore veins are pointless because there not in tier 3 dirt and it rare and the deeper you dig the better and the big the reward is bigger core-stone and cloutium ore

Bruh... This is two ore vein threads you've necro'd in 24 hours. You can't play the "I hate them, they suck" card if you are actively hunting these threads out. The indifference you try to convey contradicts your actions of actively searching for a soapbox to stand on. You clearly care and want everyone to know.

If you don't like them, don't try bringing them up. It's literally that easy. I'm not saying you are wrong, I personally think they serve a very niche purpose of helping players out with bad pc specs to see some of what the game has to offer without it becoming a slideshow. Which for me means they are useless. But I'm not shoving that belief down peoples throats in dead forum threads. If the topic is brought up organically, ofc I will comment and share my thoughts the same as any other rational person would.

Point being, lose the facade and stop preaching. You're not helping whatever cause you think you are pursuing.

just tested this, mini nukes do not destroy ore veins, i couldnt find a definitive answer on this anywhere else

I do not believe there is any way to harm or destroy Ore Veins. The only thing it does and the only interaction, in to place a Drill inside it and make the Drill operational. It increases the drop RATE of the type of Ore Vein it is, which is identified by the Ore seen inside the sparkly area.
