Gem compressor

I understand the new gem compressor that was added a while, but it's a logic based one and people say to use a lever with it. Why is that? Every time I use it I only gave it water and it worked perfectly fine without a lever, it's not even needed to compress the gems. So ultimately my question is, does water just make it automatic and a lever makes it manual?

I think lever is only if you want to manually retrieve the gems afterwards.

Cause if you turn it off with lever the lid opens.

Other than that i have no idea what's the point of putting lever on it.

I guess most people have the compressor directly hooked up to the main conveyor water line. You just need the lever if you want to take the Gems out of your compressors without having to turn the entire mining rig off.

I've had luck with the compressor tops being open and you can just grab what is inside. You can also use the magnet to pull them out if you don't want to hook up logic to it I guess.

I use the Gem Compressor with a supply of Water ONLY. The Gem Compressor automatically activates when a Gem drops through the top. I have found that the Gem Compressor lid automatically closes when a Gem arrives, remains closed, generally, for a few seconds, and then opens up. This allows me to reach in and pull out the Gem. Also, generally, immediately after the Gem gets pulled out of the open lid, the lid closes, again for a few seconds. I generally return the Gem, if I'm not going to use it, by just placing it on the end of the Conveyor that leads to the Gem Sorters with their linked Gem Compressors.

I cannot comment as to what's happening on YOUR games, but that's how its been in all my games since the new Gem Compressor was introduced in the Farming Update...

Well see thats a faulty logic. If something broken has been around for a couple of patches, doesnt mean it was intended to be like that. (hello Rake, flying vehicles every patch before 2.0, etc. etc.)

Im not sure about the "water only" thing, thats probably how it supposed to work. But the shutters randomly opening while this thing is processing looks much like a bug.

It's very likely that it is a bug cause during some session the shutter wouldn't open at all for me while Compressor was working untill i pulled the lever.

While in other sessions the lid would not stay closed at all while the Compressor was working (just for split second when the gem landed inside and then back to being open)

On second thought even "water only" part looks odd. Because that means the compressor is ON by default. Which is inconsistant with every other machine in the game, they are OFF by default. Compressor was most likely designed to be off by default too. Then you hook up water - nothing happens, you hook up lever and pull it - compressor starts processing, the shutters close and they stay close until you turn the lever off. That would look like proper operation for it. But thats just my guess.

I have my Gem Compressors immediately next to each other, with the water supply coming off a T-Pipe from the Sorter. That means the Logic Port is in contact with the adjoining Gem Compressor's "unused" side, except for the Gem Compressor that receives Onyx Gems. Yet all 4 of them behave in the same manner. Most times, the lid is open. If a Gem comes along and gets sent to the Gem Compressor, the lid briefly closes immediately after the Gem drops in and reopens a second or two later with a single larger Gem than the one that was in that Gem Compressor before the additional Gem arrived. Seems to me like that's automatic operation, that's how it's operated across multiple Save files, and it's done it in ALL my playing since the Farming Update came out...

Some compressors stay closed when they work others don't close at all (Onyx one in this specific example)

It's inconsistent.
So yea it's most likely not working as intended.

(It's been like this since Farming Update also on various saves)

Yup, im sure it will get fixed eventually. Its just not that big of a deal rn.

Question: is there a specific reason you use a straight+merger hook there, instead of just left turn conveyor? Or was is just the case of spare parts laying around?

Yup, im sure it will get fixed eventually. Its just not that big of a deal rn.

No reason i just like to watch the ores and gems bounce off the Merger ramps and how the setup looks in general :P

And it also doubles as a centralizer so i guess that's one practical use of this setup.

Cute. Since that last on is for onyx i bet you it doesnt bounce too often, but i see why it might deserve a Hero's Landing XD

Haha yea tho like i mentioned in the edit xD i have some more merger ramps off screen so i get to see some other ores/gems doing bouncy action.
