I never use fishing, I always start with Mining. It only takes a few days to a week to get enough funds together to get automation in progress. Once automation starts to get moving, mines tend to start "overproducing". If you want suggestions on Mining, I'd be glad to provide some...

Use mining and Quest to get hydrocoins. Fishing just isn't gonna cut it.

I'm one who hates wasting stuff, so any tips for starting out efficiently towards automation?

There's a lot of tips, but we don't know how far you've gotten or what's going on within your Save. I can tell you how *I* generally start a new Save, but it may not be to YOUR tastes...

  1. Find a location on the (non digable) Riverbank that has easy access to the River and to digable Dirt
  2. Place Pan (not bucket, PAN) in the River
  3. Pick up Shovel and take a scoop of Dirt
  4. Place Dirt in Pan (you should not need to move to do so)
  5. Drop Shovel and pick up the Brush
  6. Apply Brush to Pan
  7. Drop Brush and pick up Shovel
  8. Repeat steps 2 through 6 until a piece of Ore ends up spinning out of the Pan
  9. Drop whatever is in your hand and pick up any Ore that came out of the Pan. Drop the Ore into the Pan
  10. Pick up Pan and take it UP the Hill to the Jewlers
  11. Place Pan on the Table and push the red button over the Bucket beside the Table
  12. Retrieve the Hydrocoins (HC) from the Bucket and drop them into the Pan
  13. Take Pan with HC down to the Shop, remove HC from Pan, and drop them in the Shop Bucket
  14. Take Pan back to the same location where you were previously Mining
  15. Repeat from step 2 until you have about 2k HC

From there, you can purchase an Intake Pipe plus about half a dozen Straight Pipes and relocate the Pan to under where the Water drips out of the last Pipe. You should also consider using the Bucket at this time. A Bucket will hold 4 Scoops of Dirt, at which time it should be emptied into the Pan and the Bush applied to the Pan. Repeat until a piece of Ore spins out of the Pan. Wash, rinse, repeat until you have another 2 to 5 k HC. Then you can purchase your first Harvester and Miner from the Shop across from the Tools Shop.

That's my starting method...

To be honest, I used a program called Microsoft Power Automate. Essentially, trained an AI in 5 minutes to identify when the bobber went down. Soon as that happened, it would pull in the reel. Had it run for 12 hours and made over 40k in Hydrocoins. Additionally, changed the program to check if any of my machines had "sparks" to indicate they were broken (To do this, the mining-machines were set up in front of me, I converted an mp4 into a string of images that were marked as broken. While fishing the AI would look up for a moment. The main image fed, was the machines working, so if it identified a fault it would run a backup method). If yes, the program dropped my fishing rod, picked up the bucket directly under me and had a 15 minute window to pick up new repair parts using a dynamic macro. Would repair, then return to indicated start zone based on the training image I gave it as to where I wanted it to AFK. Great program and game, I chose to do this because being poor is ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ tedious, so it is easier to plan out pipe systems with everything intact. Even if you only have a single machine running in the start. Go to sleep and when you wake up, it will have earned you enough to buy multiple machines (sort your ores automatically with in-game parts, not AI player assist) in Icehelm

Whats the point then. Your not playing the game? Your using AI to do it. :steamfacepalm:

You tell me the first 20 hours of the game are not tedious lol. When you earn enough to get the scrapped machines you have to wait hours for them to produce enough metal for higher tiers. Especially if you know what you're doing. Then the game becomes a bit of a labor-fest for hours until you can pick up speed. The later game is more worth your time because you have fun materials to work with by then, hence why that is my interest. Like I said, after a night of letting the AI lift. You can have fun with the game!

At the end of the day I want to play Hydroneer for the engineering not the 'panning a bucket with a brush'

It was not hard. I have almost 200 hours in game. It is easy to make Hydro Coins just by mining. Fishing is not a fast way. Just saying that using AI is like why even play the game? Good day!

If you want to avoid the tedious panning at the start and don't want to cheese the game with some AI autoclicker nonsense, i'm afraid fishing is the only way.
Maybe it help to know, that fish will aways bite on the fourth bob of your bobber. There is no RNG involved, you cast the line the bobber goes down, up, down, up, down, up, down, fish bites.
I usually fish at the beginning until i have all 8 fishing rods. Takes about 45min and selling the fish should give you between 3500 and 4000 hydrocoins. More than enough to buy your first simple mining rig.
Then you can just shovel dirt directly on the conveyor line and you won't have to muck about with pans and brushes anymore.

Get a pickaxe and dig to the bottom of your plot, the dirt down there will be worth a lot more than the dirt on the surface. Ultimately you'll want to setup some automated mining down there, but initially just having an intake pipe and some straight pipes to drip water down to the bottom of your plot so you can constantly automatically refill your bucket is the fastest way to make money.

It will take you about an hour to afford machinery and setup some automation, then you can just shovel directly onto the conveyor.
