Gem Compressors and Logic
What does the Logic input for Gem Compressors do? I've hooked them up both with and without and it doesn't seem to change anything.

a lever on the logic input will allow you to turn the compressor off to access the gem inside and that's about it.
I might try forgetting about the logic input and place the compressors directly next to each other instead of the 1 tile space needed for the logic connection.

The logic input is the trigger that starts the process of compressing the gems

But, with the v2.1.1 update, it's not needed. So long as the new Gem Compressor's are supplied with Water Pressure, upon a new Gem entering said Gem Compressor, the Gem Compressor will activate. This means that any Raw Gems coming down the Conveyor, passing through a Gem Polisher Hook, through a Gem Sorter system, and into a Gem Compressor for the type of Gem it is, will get compressed. Therefore, the "only" Gems in the world would be the 4 Gems in the Gem Compressors (for the 4 types of Gems), the 4 Gems on the Sorters for Gem Sorting, and any Gems between the Harvester and Gem Compressors. This will keep Item Counts down and keep Graphics Performance up.

Had the same "problem". But it was a translation problem.

I play the game in german language. And the description of the gem compressors says "working with water or logic". (I think there was not enough space in the description window to translate it properly to german)
So I deleted water and added logic. Didn't work in any constellation. Tried all different logic stuff.
But there is no "water OR logic" in the english description. Water seems neccessary

Edit: The other problem I have with gem compressors I have: I don't have a valve or anything on them. Just constantly water, so it compresses everytime a gem drops in.

But if I'm close to them when a gem drops in, it stays closed and I can't reach the gem.
(Also can't grab it through the closed hatch like I read in some other threads).

Need to walk farther away and hope there isn't dropping a gem in it, when I come close again. Or have to stop the water. Or dismantle the compressor.

I agree that it sounds like the translation is poor, but I believe that's a volunteer project from people helping the Dev's. I have had no issues with the New Gem Compressor when it's placed properly. Sometimes the hatch to the Gem Compressor, at least visually, seems closed, but if another Gem comes along, it drops right in with no obvious issues and the Gem Compressor does its job.

Yes, it's doing it's job. When a new gem drops in, the hatch opens and closes again fast. But I somehow can't grab the compressed gem through the closed hatch. But it's just a minor issue

dieses merkwürdige Verhalten gegenüber dem alten Gem Kompressor, der doch viel besser funktionierte und weniger Platz wegnahm, nennt man Innovation, ;)

It may have taken up less space WITHOUT any sort of Logic Circuit to automatically compress the Gems, but, without activating the compression, the quantity of Gems would build up and eventually cause performance issues. The Logic Circuit for a Gem Compressor was fairly complex and took up a significant amount of space, both horizontally and vertically, possibly even more space than 4 Sorters plus 4 Gem Compressors with their associated Pipes.

Additionally, when one would eventually get around to manually compressing the Gems, it would cause the whole game to pause for between 10 seconds to several minutes, as it dealt with all those individual Gems getting compressed down to a single set of Gems of each type. Without a Logic Circuit to pause the conveyor that feeds to Gem Compressor, activating the Gem Compressor would cause Gems being delivered to get stuck between the Conveyor and the Gem Compressor. All in all, I'd rather deal with issues accessing the 4 different Gems in the Compressor, that a potential avalanche of issues stemming from a LARGE number of uncompressed Gems stuck at various potential points in the Mine...

I had a similar setup in my Icehelm Mine, pre v2.1. I find the NEW Gem Compressors to take up no more space than that, yet are more efficient in keeping Chunk count down. With your setup, outside of manually activating the Gem Compressor, your Gem Count can get as high as 504 PLUS anything between the Harvester and the GC. I'll get you an up-to-date screenshot of my GC Area, but my Gem Count is only EIGHT plus what's between the Harvester and the GC's...

CU
