Question about dirt / tier
Does dirt carries theyr respective tier when i grab it with the shovel, or is the tier bound to the height?
I.e. if i take dirt from tier 1, and take it to the bottom of the tier 2, will that dirt be tier 1 (as it originally was) or tier 2?

But if you were to take dirt from the bottom, bring it up and blob it on the floor to do infinite dirt from it, you are going to get surface level quality because dirt blobs don't retain that depth info.

Form my knowledge, it is the hight and how deep that determines the tiers, it will not work if we get some form deep below and bring it up, if take t2 and place it up where t1 is at, then t2 dirt will become t1

It's based on layers you dig down. T1 is from 1-8 blocks. I learned the hard way if you're doing T1 the drills harvest from one block down where you place it. So if you're digging with a pickaxe until you hit T2 dirt the drill will not drill. It'll just keep making a clinking sound.

Dirt (as in NOT dirt chunks) is bound to level within a plot. So shoveled dirt will just become what it is when placed. Chunks however are entities similar to ore, gems, shards, bars, etc. Meaning they retain info, such as what height they were created. Thus shipping dirt chunks created in lower depths up to the surface to be processed in a harvester won't cause them to be tied to the level the harvester is placed at. Hope that helps.

Worth noting this also applies to panning manually. If you were to place the pan on the surface, run down to the bottom of a hole with the shovel, scoop it up then go back to the surface and place said dirt straight into the pan off the shovel... whelp you just wasted your time as that dirt is now surface level dirt.

Unless this was changed to have the dirt on the shovel retain properties an entity would have until it is either made into chunks or normal dirt, then yes. Best to sift on the level you got it from. However, you shouldn't be in the sifting stage of the game long anyhow. Hardly a concern.

I'll go check real quick though to be certain. Edit this post in a min or two.

Alright, seems the dirt on the shovel retains properties now. Didn't last I checked in pre2.0. But converting it to just dirt causes the dirt itself to be based on height again.

oh so its ok to bring it from a lower level and shift it to get better? it was like that pre 2.0 in the beta

Could be I misremembered since I checked it back in '19 and haven't thought much of it since. But OP was a tad vague in what they meant. So tried to cover all bases since he wasn't clear about sifting from different layers or creating dirt blobs on drills or any other scenario.

idk but i had watch MANY videos before buying this game and almsot every one talked about digging to the lowest lvl in the starter lot to get the best shifting loot

msot that i watch were bringing the dirt up and shifting by the lake,
so you said it DOES keep the stats now and does what i want? lower level dirt is best EVEN IF I BRING IT UP to top level?
The author of this thread has indicated that this post answers the original topic.
