Is it better to compress uncut or cut gems?
Like title says - is there any difference? It's kind of hard to judge.

No difference, as far as i can tell. Compressing gems simply allows you to set more expensive gems into your jewelery to increase the selling price of the whole thing.

Fair enough. Of there is no difference I can stop doing manual grinding. Pun not intended.

Thank you!

I just tried this out and there is a bit of difference. An uncut sapphire w/0.92 weight according to the scales & jeweler would sell for 13. After grinding, it was still 0.92 weight, but worth 22 according to scales & jeweler.

Granted, I am still on the first plot (just like to chill and hand mine) a 9 coin gain for this gem may not seem like much. But you will need fewer gems to make up the cost of the grinder vs the gem compressor.

So basically it is up to you. Also noticed some scales have been placed near some of the shops & stock market areas, so you may not even need to buy a scale now!

I believe if you cut them you would be better off selling them directly or putting them in jewelry. My understanding is that compressed gems are worth less then the base uncut value of the gems making them, and far less then the cut value of the gems. The value of the compression comes from shear number, as in making a piece of jewelry with a single compressed gem made up of say 100 uncut gems adds more value then selling 100 uncut gems separately and saves you cutting them all by hand. Unless they are big gems from way down deep, or you don't have an automated setup yet I would just toss them all in the compressor and make some jewelry from the result.
To actually answer your question though, I am not sure if cut will produce a more valuable compressed then uncut.

I did some quick testing and found some interesting results.

2 uncut emeralds, weight 2.57, value c.38 produced a compressed emerald, weight 2.57 value c.51

2 uncut emeralds, weight 2.11, value c.31 produced 2 cut emeralds weight 2.11 value c.52, produced a compressed emerald weight 2.11, value c.42

Doing the math shows that the value of the compressed gem is based entirely on weight and not whether the gems are cut or not. Compressing uncut gems will increase the value/weight while compressing cut gems will decrease the value/weight, and neither cutting nor compressing has an effect on weight.

Using devtools I spawned 2 exact same uncut ruby gems:

uncut ruby - worth 150 coins

same ruby compressed - worth 200 coins weight 10

same ruby grinded - 250 coins weight 10

I know you've now found the answer, but for future reference, the Wiki has all this info included :)

Take the Ruby for example;
