Cut gems sell for more I believe, so I'd cut em before selling them. To get rid of mine I'll often make several smaller gold ingots to use up my gems.
Time to start up a big necklace industry! You can speed it up with the smelter I'm told.

That's a good suggestion.
Compressed gem sell for a bit less per weight unit than cut gems, but you can craft really heavy jewelery with compressed gems, instead of having to set a tiny cut gem into your
3 humungus gold ingot necklace.
The gem compressor can combine multiple gems at the same time and output the gems in their respective types.
